Never understood owners' desire to let their moggy access to the home at will, just to bring in half dead wildlife to crawl into some inaccessible corner and die and stink.

Ours waits outside the door and undergoes a full body search before entry is granted.
Problem we have now is that our cat was free to roam in and out as we had a small window in the bathroom we just kept open in our last house. Useless hunter so never brought any dead things back lol. If we just leave him outside he will scratch at the door and damage it, since we are renting don't really want that to happen.

Same here.
We had a cat flap in the old house but it only gained him access to the garage. I don't want ours bringing his half dead or half eaten rodents into the house thank you very much.
We tried without a flap here and he soon got the hang of coming to the kitchen door to be let in or out when necessary.

I have 3 cats, who want to go in or out about 300 times per day, each.

Exactly.

Our cat sit next to the door and ask to go out. You open the door, he looks outside, looks at you, looks outside again and lick his leg. You close the door.

5 minutes later, same game.

He is outside, stand by the door to get in, you open it. He looks at you, looks outside, looks at you again and stay there.

Repeat ad nauseum

It's easy - don't let him in, just because he's sitting by the door.

With our 14 cats I am thinking of putting a set of traffic lights on our cat flap. The cat flap leads into the garage, which we use as waiting room.
I must say it gives times when I feel sorry for the cat flap, if you have on the outside, one of the old girls who want to go in and on the inside a young one that wants to get out. The poor cat flap is in the middle.
Oh the problems some people have.

Any recommendations for the Zug area? I doubt my quote from Daniel Maeder would be as low due to distance.
Thanks!

Put his food the other side of the door and wait. Don't let him in ( or out) by any other route.
You can also open the flap yourself and push his head through so that he gets the idea.

Re: Cat door installation, how much? update

I followed Markarina's recommendation as I'm in the same area.

I called Glas-Technik and Mr. Reichlin (who speaks English) visited, took measures and send a quote.
Few weeks later and my window has been replaced with a new one that has a cat door as I rent.
Cost: chf 625.- includes new window w/cat door, installation and packing of original window.
Very satisfied!

What about winter? Not having a cat flap could result in a frozen cat.

Our "Charlie" is also typical. He meows to go out, snifs a few times and goes back in. A few minutes later the same and so on.

Yesterday I was thinking of making a cat bed with a small electric base cover which is somehow activated by the cat sitting on it. That way if he gets caught outside in the winter he will be OK and I dont use power when he doesnt use it.

Re: Cat door installation, how much?

We have a pneumatic tube system, which actually worked out cheaper than having a cat-flap cut in the double-glazing. The cat has learned how to climb into the little pod and tuck its tail in so that it doesn't get trapped. The pod closes automatically and then gets sucked up the tube (it runs up the chimney and down the end wall of the house). The pod comes to a gentle stop and opens automatically. Sometimes the cat just does it for fun - not really wanting to go out.

The only problem is that my daughter now wants a second cat, and I'm not sure whether we can adapt the system to accommodate the in/out wishes of two cats. Hmm.

I used to call it the pussy sucker, but my wife didn't like the term, so now it's just referred to as the Fanny pipe (Fanny is the name of the cat).
