We have a pneumatic tube system, which actually worked out cheaper than having a cat-flap cut in the double-glazing. The cat has learned how to climb into the little pod and tuck its tail in so that it doesn't get trapped. The pod closes automatically and then gets sucked up the tube (it runs up the chimney and down the end wall of the house). The pod comes to a gentle stop and opens automatically. Sometimes the cat just does it for fun - not really wanting to go out.

The only problem is that my daughter now wants a second cat, and I'm not sure whether we can adapt the system to accommodate the in/out wishes of two cats. Hmm.
Good grief! Where did you find a system like that?

It was ex-NASA. But it's a bit finicky, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. For one thing, it can get quite hot when we have the fire lit, and I'm always a bit worried that the pod might get jammed half-way.

Exactly. I keep a long pole handy in case something goes wrong, so that I can stick it up if the need arises. It doesn't really get much use, though.

Possibly a change of Fanny's usual position is required ?
Maybe length isn't the answer, possibly cir cum frence is required ?

Re: Cat door installation, how much?

We had a very surprised looking squirrel use it one day. Of course, we couldn't persuade it to climb back into the pod, so we had to let it out on to the balcony. Fanny took umbrage and wouldn't use the pipe for nearly a week. Cost us nearly CHF15 in cat-litter.
