| | | older cat making weird noises
I've searched the internet, and can't find anything that isn't alarming, so here goes:
My 10 year old Siamese mix cat has started in on some weird noises lately. He makes a groan-sigh (like Harrumph! if a cat could speak) fairly frequently. Sometimes he does it when he's purring, sometimes when he's walking around, sometimes just because.
There's no correlation with litter box use, eating, drinking, moving, or anything else except it is more common when he's purring. Sometimes it sounds like there's something stuck in his throat (hmp, hmp, hmp, harrumph.) He doesn't seem to be in pain, his breath isn't particularly bad, and he's not losing weight or his appetite (unfortunately). No significant increase in water consumption or litter box contents. He's an indoor cat, and has not been out of the house except to chew on the herbs we keep on the balcony. He's exceptionally friendly lately as well, though maybe that's just because he's got a toddler and a baby to compete with.
Has anyone heard of this before or experienced it? Is he just getting old? He was just at the vet two months ago, so I hate to drag him all over town on the bus just so the vet can say, yes he's old and he's really really fat.
Thanks for any ideas (and yes, jokes are also welcome... )

Maybe he is just horney and aware of the fact that he is an indoor (and possible disarmed) cat and that made him grumpy....?

If you are worried go to your vet.

My older Siamese ( I have three one of them lives in peru with my mom) has gotten more spoiled as she has grown older and now craves more attention than ever (she is also 10)...Siamese as you know are very talkative so I really would not worry, if he is eating well and you see no worrisome signs I would let a week pass by before taking him to the vet. Specially if you say that there is no correlation to his peeing or going to the kitty toilet...give him a hug for me | | This user would like to thank Angela-74 for this useful post:

You can call the Tierspital and explain the situation... they will tell you if they consider it would be best to bring him to the spital.
In my recent experience, they have enough 'patients' to force you to bring him for nothing; and they are extremelly friendly and helpful.
All the best to your kittie.

Our 14-year old moggie is deaf and howls and moans at most inappapropriate times. Perhaps your cat can't hear the noises she is making...

My 10 year old Siamese mix cat ... | | | | | There you go, Siamese (if you please).
My two do really weird things all the time, very strange sounds from sighing, coughing, speaking in and alien tongue, glossolalia, grunting, exclaiming etc.
The dry hack could be fur, the sighing could be the heat or maybe just boredom.
It all sounds OK, but take the poor thing to the vet anyway. Maybe he's just looking for a day trip.

Update,
The cat in question continues to be his cantankerous old self, so I guess he's okay...I hate to take him to the vet without a good reason (he's had bladder surgery, which made him seriously distrust the vet, and really, who could blame the poor guy...). I will update if anything changes | | The following 3 users would like to thank swiss_in_training for this useful post:

Your cat is getting older and more vocal -- it's both natural and not unlike what humans do. Our cats now moan, groan, and snore like a human and we just chalk it up to them being 13 years old...

I had a cat that snored, loudly. If she was lying beside me on the couch I would have to turn the TV sound up. She also spoke alot (not a siamese, just a tabby) squeeked around all over the place.
She lived until the grand old age of 16, with no other problems except that she polished the parquet with her low hanging tummy!!
But I suppose everyone's belly droops a bit when they get older...

Yup, Saturna used to wrap her ample body round my head, like a fur hat, and snore in my ear!! It was great in the winter, but a bit sweaty in the Summer!!
God, I miss her!!

| | | Re: older cat making weird noises
similiar to the OP, one of my three cats are recently making a lot of noises, especailly in the middle of the night
She is 4.5 years old, so not old and I've had her since she was 7 months. She's been in Switzerland since 2009 and the currently flat since April this year - hence the meowing/crying is unlikely tied to a change of environment.
When we are home and watching TV or hanging around, she seems fine. She might meow a bit, but nothing long or persistant. However, in the middle of the night, usually around 5am, she would start meowing and crying like crazy! It has been like this for most of May and we took her to the vet. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with her and a full blood panel was done as well showing everythign normal. The situation improved in mid June, so I was happy. BUT, it has just re-started again . We tried to ignore her when she does this as not to encourage her to use meowing as a way to seek more attention especially in the middle of the night. Yet the few times I went out of the room to check, she would immediately take me downstairs to where her food is. There's still plenty of food there, so it wasn't like she's out of food. Then, while I was sitting there, she would eat. It's like she wanted me to be there while she eats!? She's been on this food (Royan Canin Sensitivity) since spring this year.
She's lost a bit of weight as well, but nothing too much to worry according to the vet. I have no idea what to do with her and it's really getting quite annoying when I get woken up middle of the night.
These cats have always been indoor cats only both in the states and in CH. They have never been allowed in bedrooms in their whole lives so they should also be used to this.
I've bought some feliway defuser hoping to calm them down, but it's apparently not working. The kitties also wear special pheramon collars that are suppose to make them happy.
Other than the early morning noise, she seems otherwise normal with some weight loss. She is, however, an easily scared cat though! (example, when I first opened the balcony door, the other two cats went out, but this one has yet to make it to the balcony at all and she would just sit inside and look).
Anyone has any idea? I really have no clue on what to do. |

My bf's cat is a Siamese. He is 17 yrs old... Starting last summer he has been meowing in the middle of the night, every night.
When I am sleeping at my bf's place and the cat is meowing like that, it is creepy and I get scared... you have the impression that someone is torturing him! Terrible.
Now he has other health problems and we think in few weeks he will go to cat's heaven but the meowing is something we will never understand. |

there is a possibility, that the cat has pain when pissing or shitting, or cannot piss or shit, thats why shouting in the middle of the night
our cat was doing the same, later it came out medium level of kidney insufficieny - better let it checked by vet

Try with a vet... sometimes a change of voice can be an early sign of serious stuff...
Best of luck.
