Hello,

Was wondering if anyone knew what paperwork would be required for our dog to re-enter the US. We are leaving Switzerland within a month after living here for 2 years. Our dog was brought over from the US. I am going to call his vet, but just wondered if anyone had any experience with what was needed.

When the mutts and I leave I will be using a professional animal shipper - whose service includes chasing down all regs and paper work, dotting all Is and crossing all Ts. In my various moves around the globe I've found that a professional, while expensive, gives me the peace of mind I need. You might look into that option.

What a pleasure it is to read that people moving away are taking their pet with them, as opposed to abandoning him/her. Animal shippers sounds like a very good idea - everything will be taken care of, and you and your pet will have peace of mind.

Caleb and Meloncollie I did find your information very useful and panicked because they said the dog must have a rabies vaccines 30 days before US entry. I looked at our dog's tag and it expired a few months ago. When living in the US, our vet would aways remind us of vaccines that were upcoming. I read a little further to find that rabies vaccine is not necessary for entry if you have lived in a rabies free country for more than 6 months. Switzerland is one of those rabies free countries, so I felt much relief.

You need an international health certificate for the airline, and to enter the US you need proof of rabies vaccination. It's very easy by comparison.

Don't take much dog food with you as the likelihood it will be seized by Customs is very high. If you're lucky, you'll arrive on a good day when someone is working who's got some sense about them, but the rules are that it should be seized.
