Re: Cartrophen for Dogs...

Hi there, I've been avidly reading about your poor doggy and would love to know how you get on with the vet in Germany.

Our 13 yr. old retriever is a walking pill bottle (but still thinks he's a 2 yr. old) and on top of all the other issues he's starting with arthritis now as well. He's done well over the last 2 yrs with Teufelskralle pills for assorted joint complaints but this summer we've noticed he's become a bit slower.

Would like to be able to know I can head off to Germany for a treatment not available here. Good luck!

Going to Germany is the easy bit for use as we KNOW the drug works for him. Cartrophen has controversial research in terms of its success rates. Some vets say pain relief is just as good and then food suppliments. However, we tried the pain relief and he got used to it so you end up increasing the dose. Plus cartrophen injections have shown in some dogs to slow down the degeneration of the bones and help with pain relief.

I would highly recommend cartrophen and hope it works for every dog the way it does for our Lui. Lui also thinks he is 2 years old. Plus he is a well travelled companions. He's come from Australia to UK, then Switzerland and soon to be Germany

Amazing what we do for our 4 legged companions.

Before trying 'folk remedies' with one's pet, it is recommended to first consult a veterinarian as to safety and efficacy.

This is especially important when one's pet is ill or elderly.

---

As to WD-40, this makes interesting reading:
http://arthritis.about.com/od/altern...nts/f/wd40.htm

Furthermore, from the WD-40 website:
http://www.wd40.com/files/pdf/msds-wd494716385.pdf

"Ingestion: This product has low oral toxicity. Swallowing may cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. This product is an aspiration hazard. If swallowed, can enter the lungs and may cause chemical pneumonitis, severe lung damage and death."

As dogs tend to lick anything applied to their skin, use in this manner perhaps might not be advisable.

The jury seems to be out on whether or not Nutmeg oil is potentially dangerous for dogs. While generally considered safe in small quantities,
hallucinogenic effects been reported in larger doses. I have been unable to find dosage stats, though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_poisonous_plants
http://www.doctordog.com/dogbook/dogpoison.html

Again, it would be best to speak to a vet before use.

----

Glad to hear that you have found a helpful vet in Germany, Darkhorsedrea. Hope your doglet continues to do well.
does Vitamin E or Fish Oil/Omega 3 supplement benefit dogs' old age health? It obviously helps humans. sorry... it just came to mind. I hadn't ever thought to research it. As my senior boy gets older and older without showing signs of stopping I'm starting to think of these things. I've never had a dog live this long!

Drea, good luck with your Labrador!!! let us know after you get back home and have time to post how it all went!

I don't know about old age, but Fish oil calms Lily the Pup and makes her coat great... she is 7 now and bounces around like a puppy, so we'll have to see what happens as she ages.....

Does anyone know of any vets close to the Swiss border for us to make the trip? The injection has to be administered once a month.

Try contacting this veterinarian in Waldshut.
http://www.tierarztpraxis-waldshut.de/

Don't forget to take your dog's pet passport with you when you go, as you will be crossing the border.

Hope this is a solution. Do let us know.

So......update.

Found a lovely vet. A lady who lives in Zurzach str just over from Bad Zurzach. Takes an hour to get there during they day, so avoiding major traffic. She very friendly and Lui loves going. In fact he drags me there.

So doggie has had 2 out of his 4 week treatment and its only cost us 70 euros plus fuel. Once he's had his 4 weekly jabs we will go to 1 per month. So perfect. It's worked out well and doggie is much more mobile!!!

The vet is that good I'm considering going to her with our other animals cat has kidney failure and other lab needs spay lol.

Would be helpful to others if you posted a link to her website, or if none available, posted her details. The best place to do this is on the Vet thread which many have contributed to. It was started so everyone can benefit.

Hello,

I have posted in The Vet recommendations page for ease of search etc.

'I wanted to add this vet, as I have found her to be very professional and extremely caring of all our animals. We had to go to her when we found out Switzerland does not license our dogs arthritus injections'

She is a one woman band but don't let that put you off

Hello,

I have posted in The Vet recommendations page for ease of search etc.

I guess I should have looked there but was in a hurry and I remembered this thread. Regular vet can't see Hana until Friday and that is too long to wait. So we have an appointment first thing tomorrow with the doctor we used to go to before we moved (and still go to sometimes though the traffic is a nightmare). I actually prefer their office to one reason, it has no stairs. The vet we have been going to has stairs to the front door. The dog can't manage the stairs and neither can I.

Hana had a back operation a couple of years ago. Bassets are prone to back problems but at 11.5 years old I suspect it could be arthritis.

Well Dr Selle is great if you re thinking of going there. How's your German? Mines not great but between my mix of English and German we manage fine.

If you go there mention me ( the Englisch Frau with a crazy dog Louis who loves her!)

She doesn't have stairs and she's very attentive. It's hard to leave with Louis as he loves going there so much. Hope Hana is ok. If caught early Arthritis can be managed well with Cartrophen. After two years we have only needed to start thinking of pain relief for Louis now. He's nearly 11. He's had a cancerous growth removed by her too. He's a battler!!
