| | | Urgent Advice needed on cat
Alright peeps, I need some urgent advice from fellow cat owners. I gave my cat the usual treat, a Vitakraft kitty stick (turkey and lam flavor)....I noticed it too late, but there was an extremely pungent smell coming from the stick. Unfortunately, she took a bite from it already.....I checked the expiration date and it is still good. I usually buy her those sticks but they never stink THAT bad. I needed to open a window and wash my hands thoroughly. Has anybody else experienced something similar with pet food (namely with Vitakraft cat sticks?)....also, cats are usually pretty savy when it comes to bad food...should I be worried?

I wouldn't worry. Cats are pretty fussy. If it was a dog maybe a different situation. I don't use those treats but if you do normally and it was not right then just keep an eye on them. Plenty if water at hand. Also my experience is that cats are great at vomiting things up :-)

The feline sense of smell is something like 15 times our own (even more powerful than dogs). She probably wouldn't eat it if it were bad. Anyway, cats eat mice and live to tell to the tale (or tail!), so they must have iron stomachs. Oh, and 9 lives.

The only thing, she's a 14 year old diva...and I hope that she got all of her senses in check. I ate some nasty stuff in my life...but that stick smelled terrible!! |

But I'm sure she'll be fine. Maybe it smelled great to her b/c she hasn't smelled food in years? There is almost nothing nastier than the fish head aroma of cat food. But maybe it's like paradise to our little friends. They don't understand why we like our food so bland (sorta like expats in Switzerland, lol).

But for your own peace of mind might as well throw the rest of the treats away

She'll be fine, cats have a high tolerance to these things.

Glad to hear your kitty is okay LiB!
Just to help reassure you though, cats ARE pretty good at voiding themselves of something that disagrees.
By way of anecdotal evidence I can say that my Bonny-cat Featherfoe loves to catch and eat moths, which her lil tum tum doesn't particularly care for. We can pretty well count on seeing the moth again within about 30min of her swallowing it. | | This user would like to thank Peg A for this useful post: | |
