Re: Meet me new Avatar... King Nelson.

grumpy, thank you for sharing this with us.

King Nelson is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for giving him a chance for a better live. I just can’t stop looking at the picture Nr.4 …he is a gorgeous little dog. Despite everything that has happened to him, he still has these “happy puppy eyes”.

Good luck and please, keep us updated.

Re: Meet me new Avatar... King Nelson.

I will post some new photos here from time to time, but we have also created a FB page for him for his fans in Russia and Germany to follow his progress, updates will be in English and German and there's already quite a lot more photos of him there.

Please tell your friends, we'd like to use this page in a way to encourage adopting dogs from Rescue Centres.... hopefully he can be a little 2 legged furry ambassador to the cause!

Re: Meet me new Avatar... King Nelson.

I had to go to a planning meeting this evening, but at a certain moment I found myself thinking of King Nelson, and completely lost track of what was going on. I had to be "called to order", and then attempted to say something half-way intelligent, but I could not get this little fellow out of my mind. I have even gone onto Facebook, something I vowed I would never do, just to see pics of him.

Grumpy, you and your wife are two in a million!

He obviously doesn't know that there is anything wrong with him and our intention is not to pamper him or pay too much attention to his problems, he seems to be coping just fine without too much intervention from us, and that can only make him stronger. Our only real concern is back and hip problems that may develop in later life if we don't get his wheels right.
GG, if anyone can do right by this little guy, I just know it is you and your family. That is one lucky dog. In case you need to seek advice, one of our dogs was operated on by an orthopaedic specialist vet. I am happy to provide his contact details.

Re: Meet me new Avatar... King Nelson.

It seems Nelson is very much a snow puppy..... he loves it! Here's a little video of him enjoying it, the first bit was taken yesterday, the snow was frozen but today we've had fresh snow which makes it easier for him to get around. He is getting quite independent and likes to wander off on his own and in deep snow he's actually quite difficult to catch... which of course he thinks is a great game. He also loves to nick things, shoes, slippers, hats and gloves.

And you can see here how well he and Dylan, our Rescue Rotti get on, he's also the same with Kyra our other Rottweiler.

His new harness and wheels should be here soon, I'll post an update when he's had a chance to get used to them. You'll be better watching this on YouTube at full screen as he's quite small in some shots

Grumpy, you must have sixth sense! Just a couple of days ago, I was wondering how King Nelson was getting along and, voila, your video clip! Our little fellow seems to be doing so well - love seeing him playing with Dylan! Look forward to the next update, and the happiest of New Years to you and all your "team"!

Re: Meet me new Avatar... King Nelson.

Nelson went to the vets on Monday to get snipped and while he was under the vet suggested he remove part of his very tiny front right leg. He had one claw and a tiny pad that was always opening up, so we agreed to having it amputated. It hasn't bothered him though and he is still as mobile as ever.

We got a great harness with wheels sent over from St Petersburg but he doesn't like using it, he prefers to just hop and slide around the farm chasing the Rottis and the cats.... and also the horses. This photo wasn't staged, he just ran up to the rope and grabbed it and Salaa, our stallion, seemed to know he had to be very gentle with the little chap.

Nelson really is a major part of our family now!

So happy he is doing well, and recovering from his surgery.
Maybe he could come to the Jubilee celebrations? I suppose though it would be a bit too hectic for him.

Re: Meet me new Avatar... King Nelson.

Every time I see a pic of Nelson my heart just melts... what a special little guy he is - and what a trooper!

From what I've learned about amputation and non-functional limbs, you've done the right thing. I've been told it's best to take the limb off at the hip/shoulder joint, as a partial limb will likely always have the problems you've seen. And as you've seen, most dog recover from the surgery far more easily than one would imagine.

Nelson is living the life most dogs can only dream of... thanks to you.

Give the little guy an extra cuddle or two from the Muttley Crew.
