I had hamsters... one i brought was pregnant so ended up with 8 surviving babies (was 10 to begin)!! she was very friendly hamster as were her babies was able to put them in my shirt pocket together when they were still young and could be kept together the pet shop brought them back off me.. but i had syrian one and this was not so friendly and took a long while to tame enough to handle. I preferred my gerbils which I had 3 kept together and they used to play together loved being stroked.. or my dwarf rabbit who was so teenie. My european/lop cross was not so friendly and many a time was scratched by him rather viciously as he hated being picked up! My hubby doesn't like rodent like creatures so i doubt ill be having any more in the future.. enjoy your new pet x
hey, i was recently came accros tutti.ch they have a not bad pet section with lots of rodents up for sale.
just did this quick search for you so some hamsters seem to be in your or neigbouring kanton.
I would reccommend buying direct from the breeder and going to pick up the hamster so you can see their living conditions. often good breeders will handle the pets regularly so this might mean the hamster might be more open to being picked up ect.
they also have a accessories section.
personally i would get gerbils, i used to have 2 (now 1) and they are more friendly and active during the day, so very entertaining to watch. you have to get 2 though but they take up about the same space as a hamster and more importantly keep each other company.
If your gerbil or other rodent is biting your finger then what i recommend is when they go to bit your finger blow air really strongly into their face, it doesn't hurt them but they dont like it and soon stop biting.
but make sure your fingers dont smell like food, cause even my fella will try to nip me after ive eaten a mandarin.
hey,
look I think this is going a bit off topic. the important point to note is that ANY pet can bite or misbehave, its about training them not to with patience love, care and some disipline (kinda like children eh? supernanny anyone).
While rodents will never display the kind of love and affection of a dog or cat, they certainly can be very rewarding pets.
this video about taming Degus is a good example of how to approach training or taming.
as i mentioned a quick puff of air in the face is enough to discourage my gerbil from nipping, and does not hurt him in any way.
He is pretty tame and while he does not run into my hand he does not run away, he is okay about being picked up as i always give him a treat when he is in my hand as positive reinforcement, and i make sure not to hold him for long periods of time, little quick sessions are best early on.
Im pretty sure hamsters are not aggressive because they remember the good old days of freedom, but maybe because they are not fully tamed.
