Pet sitting network for rabbits, rodents, reptiles, fish and birds

Hello all pet owners

I've Quoted summerrain as to the concept and benefits of the original Pet sitting network below.

However, as much as I love dogs and cats I don't have any, and find trawling through long lists of mainly dogs and cats to try and find someone with a gerbil can be quite time consuming in the other pet sitting network.
So in an effort to save some time and also see what other kind of cool pets EF people have I have decided to start this thread for any pet other than a cat or dog. I hope you cat and dog lovers wont be upset, just obviously this just makes it easier as I'm not about to ask a woman with 3 cats to mind gerbils.

hopefully if it is successful it might get edited into the original sticky (mod hint hint).

so please help get this pet sitting network running by posting your pets details and even a picture if possible.

I have seen quite a number of threads where people are looking for pet sitters and it can be extremely difficult during the holidays or if you just fancy a weekend away with your other half. Myself included, have had problems over the recent Easter period and fancied a quick trip over to the UK but the pet sitter wasnt working over the Easter period as well.

Inspired by Hsiang's thread on tandem language partners, I was wondering if fellow pet owners out there are keen on the idea of a pet sitting network.

I understand that there will be people who will have concerns over insurance, the experience of the people that you might considering to entrust your beloved pet with. Hence, it will be great if you are planning on joining this network, to list as much details as you can about you, your environment and pet. For example:

Your pet
Type of animal: dog, cat, hamster, guinea pig etc etc
Breed
Age of animal
Animal spayed?
Gender

Your environment

House / Apartment?
Garden?
Any other pets?
Your location

Any other information

- Any other info about your pets needs will be great as well. This is for other owners to see if there is a match similar both pets lifestyles, before contacting you to pet sit.

This of course, will not involve money. Just provide your pet's food, bed, toys if need be. It will be similar to the concept of leaving your pet with a trusted friend and hopefully build up a support network of people who can help you look after your pet if you fancied a last minute getaway, that might not be convenient for your pet to come along, or need to make any emergency trips back to your home country.

Obviously, it will be nice to return the favour as well, down the road.

Just a thought - I am sure there will be other pointers that have not crossed my mind, please feel free to jump in with any comments or suggestions. If there is enough positive feedback, hopefully, we can ask the mods to make a sticky and get this off the ground.

Re: Pet sitting network for rabbits, rodents, reptiles, fish and birds

Great idea.. in actual fact, I need to find someone who might visit our home once a day to feed our children's pet rabbits. We had them booked into a pet place, but apparently there was a double booking and now there is now space for ours!!

We head off next week and would appreciate someone to visit each day to check their water and give them food. That's all.. no cleaning or anything like that.

Happy to pay 5chf a day if someone can help? We're in the Volketswil area.

Cheers
Saskia

Re: Pet sitting network for rabbits, rodents, reptiles, fish and birds

I'm in the Lausanne area, and I have a dog, two guinea pigs and a hamster.

I can take care of any kind of rodents (I've had gerbils and rats in the past).

Anybody willing to take my guinea pigs for a week or two in the summer?

We have 2 cats and have just adopted 2 guinea pigs. We are in Paudex and would be very interested in 'reciprocating' pet sitting. Let me know if you would be interested!

We have two guinea pigs and a leopard gecko, along with a big standard poodle, who will make the move with us to the Zurich area this June.

I wanted to post to this thread so I'll be able to find it again easily -- I'm sure we will want to trade animal care in the near future!

thanks for the great idea...

Re: Pet sitting network for rabbits, rodents, reptiles, fish and birds

I have an aquarium in my premises in Erlenbach. About 20 small fish. They are not much bother really : )

When I go away I make use of a timed feeding machine. I have a friend go in on every third day to check on them, that they are fed and the machine is working as it should.

I am interested to potentially help out anyone else in the Meilen - Kuesnacht area who needs assistance with their small pets when they are away. In return one day, you may not mind checking on my fish a couple of times over the Christmas/NY period when I am away and my premises closed.

I'm terribly allergic to cats unfortunately... But the guinea pigs are welcome for holidays! We are in Lutry, but almost in Paudex, we're neighbours!

Re: Pet sitting network for rabbits, rodents, reptiles, fish and birds

Good idea, we recently got our daughter a hamster, and so it is great to be in a network like this.

Info: we live in neu affoltern /oerlikon area and if someone in this area needed a rodent, or rabbit/guine pig feeding for a holiday duration then maybe I'd be able to help in return for the same.

I would be scared to do reptiles tho

My OH dreams of having a gecko! We looked into the subject, but it looks terribly expensive (the special terrarium, lamps, etc.). But we would be happy to gecko-sit!

While I think this is a good idea, I would never leave my parrot with anyone other than someone experienced with large birds. For small birds, this is a good idea, but large birds, as their needs are special, particularly their housing needs, I think other than on an emergency basis for a day or evening, I would leave parrots off this list.

Hi Mélusine,

We are also located in Lausanne area and we have a small parakeet. We would be interested to take your guinea pigs when you need to. Would you be interested to have our parakeet (in his cage of course) when we are away? That would be great to do such a trade from time to time.

Let us know please.

Sure, that would be fine! I've had canaries and Budgies when I was a child.

Do you have a small parrot (no experience with those) or a budgie? That is, une perruche in French?

It is a budgie actually (a green one), yes they call it perruche in here. We are located in Renens area, which part of Lausanne do you live? I guess it is really hard to find a pet-sitter for small animals here, right?

I'm in Lutry actually, about 10 km away from you I'd guess.

You know that Swiss law forbids you to keep a budgie alone? They're supposed to be kept in group.

Qualipet (the pet shop) does take small animals for holidays. For my guinea pigs it'd be 35.- per animal and per week. That's where I'll put them this summer if I can't find another solution.

But your perruche will be fine with us

Sorry, just saw where you live, a bit far for me I am afraid...
Good luck though, I would have loved to do you this favor plus I love rabbits

Hi Cess good idea!

If anybody is looking for a pet sitter in Dietikon, please send me a PM.
I have 2 easy-going gerbils, and experience with other rodents and fish.
