Cat drinking from the water tap

Our little Fiona has this weird thing of drinking the few drops that are left on the bath, kitchen tap.
She has fresh water in a flat bowl and she normally drinks from it. However since a while she goes to the taps and licks the drops off. Does not really bother me but guests might find it a bit gross when they go to fetch tap water and see her licking her fish tongue all over it.

Anybody got some ideas how I can get her to stop?
PS: the idea of spraying her with water will not help :-( she looooves water!!

I say, if your guests don't like it, then they can get their water elsewhere. Or have bottled on stock for them.

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

could you dab some tabasco sauce on the edge of the taps, she might soon learn the taps have a bad flavour. on the other hand you would have to make sure to wipe the taps before serving yourself.

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

Hey Prof :-)

hihihi..great idea but I also have a small two year old that will most likely use it as a water slide for her doll.

Bottled water I have around also for guests as some people believe that it "tastes" better.

This. It is Fiona's house after all, she lives there It is what I say about my cat and his quirks- he has to live there 24 hours a day so visitors have to adapt.

Or maybe I am just a crazy cat lady.

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

Our cat used to do this when she got older and developed kidney problems. I don't want to scare you but maybe you should let the vet have a look at her if she is quite elderly.

Claude used to do this, Rory does too. He prefers the bath, and will miaow for you to turn the tap on. Some cats just love running water (especially from the tap, as we also have a cat drinking fountain)

My advice is let your cat drink - its good to get water into them - and never mind what your guests think. Those who matter wont mind, and those that mind don't matter

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

Agh .......If she likes it, why not ?
But dont feel you have to leave the tap on !!
As a very experienced cat owner my cats do that all the time ( Ugh they would drink the scum of the bath if they could !!)
I let them have it as a treat
One thing I have found with my cats with over 20 years experience !! ( was upto 15 rescue ones now down to 4 ! due to neighbours complaints) I have found they like the water from a metal bowl ?? why not a plastic one
of course make sure your cat is not ill, eg Diabetes or kidney problems
and getting water wherever she can

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

My cat used to sit in the bathroom sink drinking from the tap or wait for me to turn it on. I now have a water fountain.... They love it.

I've got the drinkwell platinum. They are pretty good for both our kitties plus you can grow the cat grass on the side for them.

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

It could be worse. Our cat back in the States used to like her drink out of the toilet bowl. Never fell in either.

Cats, and other animals, do the strangest things sometimes.

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

Yup... many cats do that because they prefer running water as opposed to still sitting water. We also had a fountain for our cat and she stopped drinking from the sink and bathtub taps

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

Don't want to worry you, but keep an eye out for your cat's drinking behavior. Excessive water drinking could be a sign of diabetes. One of my cats drank excessive amounts of water prior to me finding out she is a diabetic. She too would beg at the water faucet in the bathtub.

I bought mine in the UK before I moved but ideally I need a new adaptor with a euro plug. I bought it from amazon. It was about 20 quid but great investment!!

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

Hi everyone

Well she has gone from tap drinking to snow eating!! hahah guess it makes more fun.

1. she is a very young kitten so I would scatch out her having diabetes.
2. she just has "flausch" in her head and anything with running water is a game for her.
3. she ate so much bubbles from the bath last night that I was waiting for her to take off and float around in the room.
4. I think most are right, this is her home and if it dont fit visitors then that is their problem.

5. Sooooo good to know she is not alone with her behaviour.

How are all the cats out there enjoying the cold temps??? Fiona is an indoor cat and she just goes on the windowsill but comes soon in. LOVES to catch snowflakes and jumps around like a wild bunny.

Re: Cat drinking from the water tap

Our cat won't touch fresh tapwater (unless its a dripping tap) so she ignores the water bowl we place for her but she drinks water from the saucers of plant pots and from the watering can. We water our plants with rainwater so we thought it might taste better. To test this theory we started filling her drinking bowl with rainwater rather than tap water and it worked. She drinks a lot now.
