Cats- 7 or 9 lives?

In my French lesson yesterday, I had to translate a line which said 'A cat had 7 lives.' In the US, cats are supposed to have 9 lives... So, why do cats in Europe have less lives? Isn't everyone supposed to be healthier here??!!

Re: Cats- 7 or 9 lives?

I suspect it's probably down to the shortcomings of socialised medicine.

Re: Cats- 7 or 9 lives?

It must have been a typo, because cats have 9 lives in French too

Wonder where that idea came from, by the way.

Re: Cats- 7 or 9 lives?

British cats traditionally have 9 lives, but recent government cut backs are rumoured to want reduce this to 7.

This would then bring the UK in line with the proposed Euro-norm of 7 lives per cat based on parity among members states, where life sharing will operate between EU states. There are fears that Greece is unlikely to make this new target and there are already feline protest in Athens...

Re: Cats- 7 or 9 lives?

Nope, there's definitely something to this 7-lives theory:

Les chats, paraît-il, ont sept vies.

Re: Cats- 7 or 9 lives?

your post made me think - and google In German the saying is as well that a cat has 7 lives (at least in Switzerland) but according to Google in Northern Germany people say as well 9 interesting! maybe that's due to the cold weather? the more north you go the more live a cat has? maybe in Italy a cat has less lives?
