I like this idea (particularly once I got that you meant nest rather than "net" ) as one of my objections to birds is that they are messy (particularly in groups) and can get lonely.

.
Yes I meant nest, excuse my english

@ Nil:

I found these pages: http://animalesenadopcion.mforos.com...s-en-adopcion/
http://faada.org/animales?tipo=6&sex...=0&provincia=0
http://www.todoloros.es/foron/showth...-en-adopci%F3n!!!

The third one is the best one for you, I think. They all are rescue places for birds in Barcelona or Catalonia. They are in Spanish, so send me a PM if you want it translated (I don't know how much Spanish you've learnt since you moved )

I am a bit concern of the birds getting used to their food provider and if one day we move out, how this would affect their instinct to work hard to get the food.
Appreciated thoughts

I think you don't need to worry, who created them, will lead them to other nice people putting food in front of their home when you have no time to do so ... just do it now, because possibly others already got stopped and it is your turn to do it.

All the best

Re: Birds: a do or don't?

Nil, if you have space for an aviary, then consider birds, because they will have room to fly. Small birds do not need an enormous aviary.

We own a parrot, she was bred in captivity, and we rescued her from the terrible conditions in which was she living. She does not know from life as a bird in the wild and with her deformed beak and missing nails she probably would not survive.

She escaped once, and she flew to a neighbour's house and found shelter in the corner of a balcony, waiting for someone to find her.

This is what we call parakeets in the UK - I remember when they were just a few in Kew Gardens- they are now an official pest as they are making life a misery for native birds, taking nesting sites and food- as well as for fruit and wine growers.

Those are the one we also have all over the place. Our street is full of palmes and they live there. I know I should hate them for all the damage they do but gosh, they are so cure and happy.

I really love them.

Cute indeed, although their shreek is not very kind on the ears. Yes I love them too, and yet they do seem to be a bit too successful and cause the demise of many song birds, like blackbirds and also woodpeckers. I imagine they are quite 'normal' in Barca, but not in London, lol.

Except in Richmond Park, which is teeming with bright green parakeets!

Re: Birds: a do or don't?

i have 3 birds at home, its a large cage and the door is open all the time so they are free to go in and out as they want although they prefer being in the cage.

they do make quite a lot of mess and you have to consider if you go on holiday etc who is going to look after them.

depending on the type of birds they can be loud and have periods of constant screeching so something to be aware of - especially with love birds!

if you have a parakeet type bird it doesnt take long to hand tame and train but requires sessions everyday for a few weeks.

try get a young bird if possible then it can be tamed easily and will have a better nature

Re: Birds: a do or don't?

I have had budgies over the years and a couple of points are that they can be incredibly messy, and also can cause quite a few problems allergy wise if you have or frequent visitors suffer from allergies.
But they were great fun if you can train them and can keep the cage open so they have lots of freedom.
Speckles-one of my budgies was certainly not a "bird brain" and was soooo clever in the things he could do!!

Re: Birds: a do or don't?

I love bird's too. My Grandad bred them...little fire finches, hammer head finches, all sorts. I still feel sad about there caged life though.

The first time I had my big dog on a lead I asked myself "what am I doing to this majestic creature"? I don't really want another house pet. It's the conclusion I've come to.

How about penguins and ostriches. You could have one of those in an apartment, they don't necessarily fly.
May I recommend a jail bird With a little bit of luck he/she can cook or wash dishes

Re: Birds: a do or don't?

I'd suggest getting a couple of Dodos. Not only will they provide excellent subject matter during boring pauses in after dinner chat, but you'll also be helping them from averting extinction.

@ phdoofus______ Handsome bird I have a ring-neck and moustache parrot at home. I have considered bringing one with me to Switzerland. Unfortunately it is loud so it may have to stay behind
