She's on her last legs. The steroid injection has given us a little time to say goodbye, but it's clear that it's a temporary reprieve. We're going to miss her, but for now, we're celebrating the time that we have.
That is heartbraking. Life just isn't fair.

Life is a cycle. I have fifteen years of wonderful memories. They're worth every minute of the two weeks of grief. If life were only happy, we'd start to take the good times for granted.

Occasionally, you have one of those moments that absolutely blows you away. Tonight was one of those moments, and I was left absolutely speechless (and very happy I had my camera nearby to capture such a touching moment).

My cats have never, and I mean never, reacted to something two-dimensional before. They've never been interested in their reflection in the mirror, they've never been interested in what's on my screen, and despite my best efforts, having them chase a laser pointer or get interested in any of the 'cat apps' on the iPad has been a waste of time.

Which is why I was so shocked at what happened tonight.

I was editing some photos, my cat by my elbow. She was just hanging out on the desk, keeping me company, as usual. But when I pulled up this picture and started editing it, she was totally captivated. She came up to the screen, eyes wide, and started to sniff. She couldn't understand why she could see her sister, but not smell her.

She kept exploring, finally reaching out to touch her sister, trying to touch her.

It broke my heart. She ran downstairs to investigate whether her sister was still there -- and for the moment she is. But if there was a time that I thought she'd be alright with what's going to happen, with having the house to herself, those beliefs were shattered tonight.

I really, honestly, have never seen anything like what I saw tonight.
I read this through tears, that is so amazing, I don't know what to say.

Re: Sad day - cat with cancer

Well, it's a weekend of 'lasts' at Casa Idiot, our chance to say goodbye to our little friend. She's virtually stopped eating no matter how much we try, and it's getting harder for her to move around.

Still, we got up and spent the morning together, and were greeted with a glorious snow-covered landscape. Our last chance to go outside together, smelling the wintry air... (She lasted about three minutes outside before she decided she'd rather be inside on the bed, but she seemed to enjoy those three minutes!)

Re: Sad day - cat with cancer

And finally, one last Christmas. We don't normally put up our decorations so early, but we made an exception this year. In years past, the warm blanket under the tree has been our little girl's favourite spot. This year, I managed to cajole her into standing for one photo under the tree, but it's clear she prefers to be cuddled up in bed.

In any case, we're playing Christmas caroles and singing, generally having fun and hopefully making her last memories joyful, not sad.

VI, I'm glad you've had this time together, had the chance to celebrate an early Christmas, to take such beautiful photos, to create memories to cherish.

I wish there were a way to make the good-byes easier. But as there isn't, please know that you have the support and sympathy of all animal lovers here on EF.

Please give your beautiful girl a cuddle from me - and when the time comes, may her journey over the rainbow be peaceful.

Having had these two weeks to say goodbye has been a real gift and made things much easier. It's given my wife and me a real sense of closure, allowed us to take some last memories, and really spoil our two girls so there are 'no regrets'. At the same time, we see the cat getting worse and it makes the inevitable decision that much easier.

The support from everyone here has been wonderful. Thanks to all of you. It's made a real difference.
