Bird table and sparrow hawk (épervier)

Our wild birds are indeed our 'pets' especially in winter time, when we provide them with food and fresh water all the time. So many different species- it is incredible. Today is a winter wonderland up here in the Jura, and there, sitting on a solar lamp, just 2m from our kitchen door- a sparrow hawk is sitting there eyeing up the bird feeder. Stayed there posing for photos for quite a while - not sure if he got fed too? Nature is nature.

Post a photo please! I guess a bird table is the equivalent of fast food for a hawk.

Im sure you've been here long enough to know how to do something as basic as attach a photo to a post.

Re: Bird table and sparrow hawk (épervier)

No, that's the problem- been around far too long OH is a very keen photographer, so I never ever take photos. And a very keen computer/IT chap- so I never ever deal with computer technology either- just use it and shout for help when things go wrong... And OH will not have anything to do with FB or a Forum...

One of these days I'll have to get one of the local EF members to show me what to do

You could email it to me and I'll post it for you. I'll give you a lesson next time I see you. ( or maybe your house guest could show you?)

Thanks. Houseguest busy rushing around all the time (now skiing in Wengen)- but her system is very different to mine. Traditional computer versus Apple system.

Sadly, all too true.

Last year while our four resident pairs of doves happily munched at our feeder, a hawk swooped down and grabbed one. Blood and feathers everywhere...

Question for the ornithologists:

The remaining seven doves have stayed here, and the one whose partner was killed is still single. Will he/she ever bond with a new partner?

Re: Bird table and sparrow hawk (épervier)

Dove or pigeon. And if dove, what kind? But generally the answer is that doves mate for life- but if a life partner die, the left dove will mourn for a hile but eventually find another partner.

Nature can be tough- but that's the way it works.

I'm a pretty uninformed birdwatcher, but it certainly looks like a dove to me . (As opposed to the monster pigeons one finds under Chicago viaducts.)

It might be a Eurasian Collared dove:

héhéhé

The bird table is next to the kitchen door, from where is was taken.

(lesson learnt- nagging works. Must do it more often in 2014 )

Very nice picture, Odile.

On the one hand this guy looks really photogenic, but on the other he's giving you a total death glare

Re: Bird table and sparrow hawk (épervier)

Nice!

I am desparately trying to lure even just simple sparrows to my balcony with no luck

Fortunately, I've seen a few at my old residences. Judging from the enthusiastic response of Odie's pictures, I thought I'd take the liberty of adding to this post?

Watching for songbirds in the bushes (birdfeeder above, out of sight)

Going in for a closer look

My favorite: the North American Cardinal

I always enjoy seeing bird pictures!
