Sorry to fly off on a tangent, Galatea. I'm so very happy for you and Chili.
She was certainly worth the wait.

Re: 3 scams, 2 rejects and a puppy

Please don't be sorry. I posted for that very reason! To raise awareness to this and make it a talking point. With the Old English Sheepdog pup posted on here only this week, this prompted my post.

Thank you for the debate!

Actually yes it is mainly from Roumania, Hungary Poland, Spain and Greece, and pretty much in that order, I should know because I scan ads for a online auctions house day in day out and even nights, in just 24 hours, every day, a high, five digit number gets placed in the DACH region alone, I have been trained to spot red flags that hint at fraudsters and one of those many flags is the ".ro" suffax, others, from cleverer people, get routed through a US site but if you follow up you get to the domains that I mention, another flag is bad German, some don´t even bother to run it through a google translate and are totally unreadable, they get killed immediatly, others are random stock photos from the internet and IP abnomalies, or (and here the Roumanians are really good) "tankx for you inquest, plis contakt over e-mahl" there are criteria to be fullfilled before I can kill an ad so the research is pretty intensive, I am afraid I can´t give you numbers because it would be more than my job is worth so you are just gonna have to take my word for it.
We also have regular customers who try it on with the same M.O. time after time after time and time after time after time they get killed off.
Dog scams pay a lot of money, a few oodles and oodles of ads sent out in the space of a few minutes will swamp the system and a few oodles will get through, we manage to kill a oodle or three but some go live.
"Awww Sweet, a puppy, and sooooo cheap, only 50 or 100 or 199 Euros deposit"
The "puppy" gets sold to a few oodles of people and the fraudster buys a new ferrari.
Note you are not getting any details, just oodles.
Never seen any dog scams from the UK, they fraud mainly in furniture and antiques and strangly in powertools and cars.
Oh and if you want a tip, never buy a LV bag over the internet.
Mate, I don't know what you do and how did you get these results, should have a bit more info on that. BUT, the majority of the puppy farms in Eastern Europe are in Hungary and Bulgaria, and it's a recent scourge, on which many Romanian dog lovers (for instance) are trying to warn people to not try to shop animals online, or even in pet-shops. Many reasons for not doing that, let alone fear of fraudsters, the sources of provenience are just that ....factories. (won't go into details)
It's highly recommended to get in touch with a proper puppy farm (we call it "canisa" for instance, don't know how it's called in other places, anyway all of them should be registered not only locally, at the local associations of recognised dog breeders, but also internationally, here - www.fci.be), the owners will be more than happy to let you know about their puppies, arrange visits etc.. It's highly un-recommended to buy dogs online, from pet shops or even fairs. Better go for adoptions!
Anyway....back at what you mentioned...a puppy for 50 euros, who on earth can declare herself an animal lover and go after "deals" like this? A dog is not a pair of shoes or a bag.
I'm afraid sometimes, only sometimes, people get just what they deserve.

"Even" European Commission is aware of these things! As long as there will be a demand...

Re: 3 scams, 2 rejects and a puppy

And i am sure he will give lots of kisses back!!

You know, everytime i am out and about in Geneva these days. I look around and hope that i may see that puppy (the old english sheepdog) being walked around. You don't see many of them so he would be easy to pop up out of lots of dogs, i just hope he is ok.

His owner took the wrong end of the stick (bad pun) and perhaps if he came back here and explained a bit better he may have more positive responses.

Like most of you, i am concerned about that pup.

So, Lemandrew, if you are reading this. Try again. You never know....

Apparently, the Maltese is white as it was an auspicious color for the Romans- so I have them to blame!

Yes, wet he looks hilarious- he wasn't impressed but then nor was my office colleague who brought him back to my side of the office- having lifted him out of the plant pot…lol

Re: 3 scams, 2 rejects and a puppy

Well, I don't scan auction sites and never had in mind this sort of activity when I thought I would like to have and therefore buy a dog, so I had to wait quite a while...anyway, after talking a few days ago with the owners in Czech R. I am pretty confident that we will see our Chihuahua in August. If I wanted a bigger dog I would have definitely looked for it back home.
Hope I will remember to post a picture here.

Btw, a question for dog lovers: Is 1200 chf a fair price for a Chihuahua puppy or is it a bit on the cheap side? I have friends that know the owners and I am sure this is the price for which they usually sell the puppies, but I somehow expected to be a bit more expensive.

At about 250 CHF an ounce, it'd better have some flavour!

Prices are all over the ball-park, and most importantly, not necessarily indicative of responsible breeding. Selling far too cheaply is often a sign of a battery farmer, but some of the worst battery farmers charge the highest prices, in order to appeal to the 'clueless designer' segment of the market. So - do your homework.

First look for a breeder who carefully plans the mating based on based on health and temperament, who has done all the breed-relevant tests and who will not only give you the certificates but also encourages you to speak to the vet for verification, who has a proper puppy socialization program in place, who encourages you to visit to meet the dogs and see his/her set-up well in advance of a mating, who grills you to within an inch of your life to ensure that you will be a good owner for his/her pups - and who, as Galatea points out in this thread, establishes a relationship with you, provides life-long advice and back-up. And it goes without saying - whose dogs are treated as pets rather than 'stock'.

Then look at the price.

And then when you bring your puppy home, post a pic on EF.

Wishing you and your future friend all the best.

Depends, your run of the mill garden veriety Chihuahau with papers will go for 600 to 900 and just scratching 1000 Euros, dogs with Shorter hair are generally priced higher than long hair.
Colors are priced by the rarity, whereas sandy brown is low, choclolate high, piebald as a sliding scale inbetween. Then it depends on what letter the whelping-order was, "A" - "B" - "C" etc. the order doesn´t have to be from one female, but if you have a "H" or higher welping and only a handfull of bitches, then you are in the tender hands of a puppy mill.
You get the highest prices for the so-called "tea-cup" Chi´s where the smaller the more expensive right up to the "Russian tea-cup Chihuahua" go figure.
Then, look for a up to date EU inocculation pass if muttley is from out of the country and don´t forget that all dogs in CH must be chipped.

Why not look locally for dogs needing a new home? There are posts on here with dogs who might make a fine companion for your lowchen. You have not said how old your dog is but often a puppy is not the right choice for a family with a dog.

Just my 2 cents worth..

As it happens, one of my dog's litter mates is looking for a new home. 1.5 years old, beautiful dog, and ours, at least, is incredibly smart and loving (amazing with kids of all ages). I quoted the wrong post and am too lazy to change it on the iPad, but the link is here if you're interested, Fenders: http://www.foxred-labrador.com

Thanks for the replies. We have been looking locally at the rescue centres but we need one that is good with other dogs and also children, we have three little ones 5 and under but we will keep looking out.

Labradors are beautiful, just too big for us and Rossi (lowchen), we also rent landlord doesn't mind two small dogs at a push, but thanks and I hope he finds a great home.

The same scams are run for the more expensive cat breeds, too. Pure breeds selling for 3 or 4 times lower than the "normal" high price is a sure RED flag and should be avoided.
