Dog Food question

Hi all, I need a bit of help with sourcing dog food. Have done a bit of searching here on EF and online but so far have failed to find the answer to my dilemma.

We feed our dog Ziwipeaks and Nature's Menu Country Hunter Raw Super Food nuggets (we are still in the UK moving in the summer!). This are basically a frozen complete raw food with all the nutrients added (a great lazy raw food feeder's solution!)

I have tried to search for these but have come up with nothing. Got lots of Barf (ha ha!) info! Don't want to have to buy a big freezer and do it myself, I want piece of mind that my dog is getting all she needs diet wise and the ease of just taking out the food … defrosting it and being good to go!

I was just wondering if anyone knows if we can buy them in Basel/Switzerland OR if there is something similar available? Thank you and Merry Christmas x

Short answer is no, unfortunately I don't think there's anything similar here. The only thing I've seen like that, and I don't know if it's still done, is some of the supermarkets sell various minced/diced meats for animal consumption in their chilled meat counters. Maybe Meloncollie, our resident dog expert, will know though.

Re: Dog Food question

I would get in touch with both the manufacturers and ask them for advice and distributors in Switzerland, or, failing that, in Germany or France, depending whre you are going to move to. Good luck.

Re: Dog Food question

It's not quite as easy as you want, but do check out Goldenway; the closest branch to Basel is probably Brugg but they do prepacked frozen meat which is easy to simply defrost then add veg, pasta, rice, herbs, oil or whatever to it

Re: Dog Food question

Ziwipeak was available in Switzerland from several boutique shops, For instance:
http://www.raubtieroase.ch/Hundeshop...ZiwiPeak-Hund/
http://www.futter24.ch/ziwipeak.html

However I see that there have been supply/delivery problems in Europe, the first link says that they expect problems through Feb 2015, the second only says 'according to the importer, not deliverable'. So it sounds like you should bring a supply with you when you move, and you should contact some Swiss retailers directly to get an idea of whether or not the delivery problems are expected to be resolved.

Also from the ZiwiPeak website, here is a list of Swiss online retailers:
http://ziwipeak.com/where-to-buy-ziw...ine-retailers/

And stockists in Switzerland:
http://ziwipeak.com/where-to-buy-ziw...ype/stockists/

I don't know if these lists are updated, or not.

As for raw - and yes, it's Barf here (Bones and Raw Food). Feeding raw is so widespread that it has become a verb, barfen, as in a post on another dog forum that made me chuckle: "Ich barfe gern".

Anyway, I don't feed raw so I can't speak to quality of any of the ready-made raw products - but both Fressnapf and Meiko have coolers containing what looks to me like a Barf mix.

IIRC some EFers do feed raw, so hopefully they'll be along with suggestions and experiences.

Re: Dog Food question

Would this meat fall under the 1kilo per person Swiss customs import limit?

Re: Dog Food question

No:

included are:
  • all parts of animal carcasses fit for consumption (with or without bones)
  • sausages containing meat or blood
  • other meat products
  • food preparations with a sausage, meat or blood content of over 20 percent by weight
This does not include bone marrow, bones for stock, and dog and cat food (including "BARF" food) in individual packets marked as animal feed.

Re: Dog Food question

Odile, I have been told by both an independent pet shop and a larger chain that they just can't get the deliveries when they need it! Must be a distribution issue. Shame as It's a great product! Not sure what we will do ... Will have to bring some stuff with us and do a little more research into alternatives ... Will also contact the manufacturers and see what they say ! Thank you x

Re: Dog Food question

You may want to try "Biohund" www.biohund.ch. They offer complete meals "Biovollwertfutter «Knospe»" as well as pure meat "Biofleischmischung «Knospe», roh". It is frozen, available in different sizes and they deliver to your home.

Some "Fressnapf" stores sell "Naturadog", also ready to serve. http://www.naturadog.ch/barf.html

Hope this helps.
