Gerbils as pets

Hello dear fellow englishforumers.
I'm writing here for some advice regarding gerbils (Rennmause in German) as pets and their requirements. I am interested in getting a pair of those cute rodents as household pets and read about them quite a lot, to figure out proper cage / terrarium size and so on. Equipped with my newly acquired knowledge I've purchased a cage of size 60 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm with two levels, thus ~90l of space, while the sources I've found recommend ~37l (10 gallon) volume per pair of gerbils (sources:
http://www.humanesociety.org/animals...l_housing.html
http://www.egerbil.com/housing.html
http://www.thegerbils.com/maintenance1aqua.htm )
Then I've happily went to a pet store to get the animals, but was refused, on the condition that my cage is to small - store advice is to get at least 100 cm long cage, preferably on their premises. Now, I thought it was just a way to get me to buy more equipment from them, but the situation repeated in another store + I was informed a fine could be issued for not appropriate conditions in which animals would be held. Thus, my question is, is any of you aware on where I could find some official Swiss guidelines / regulations about animal welfare? I would love to provide good home to the animals, but at the moment I have a feeling that those two pet stores just want to force me to buy their expensive equipment (~150 - 200 CHF per cage). I would appreciate any advice on this matter.

From Schweizer Tierschutz:
http://www.tierschutz.com/publikatio...e/rennmaus.pdf

And the Wegweiser for the TSchV, see page 31:
http://www.tierschutz.com/publikatio...e/rennmaus.pdf

You must meet the TSchV ccommodation guidelines for the number of animals to be kept together.

Also see the Rennmaus club website on accommodation requirements:

If you would like advice, perhaps you could speak to the Nagerstation - this is a rescue dedicated to the 'small furries'. They know the law, and can advise on proper accommodation. Their advice line (a paid line, the money goes to help fund the good work they do) is here:

Re: Gerbils as pets

Thank you for the fast reply. So it seem they were being honest about the regulations - my bad. Now, it's time to decide whether to rebuild the cage or look for another animal that would be comfortable in this one. Any ideas?

Re: Gerbils as pets

Animal welfare - of pets, wildlife, and livestock, is regulated under the TSchV and TSchG. These includes not only minimum accomodation standards for pets but also care and handling requirements.

You can start by perusing the BLV's pet owner website, Mein Heimtier:
http://www.meinheimtier.ch/de

And also the Wegweiser linked above.

Have a read through Mein Heimtier - and then taking the Swiss perspective (and requirements) into account think about which animal would make a good pet for you.

Good luck!
