Hello dear fellow englishforumers.
I'm writing here for some advice regarding gerbils (Rennmause in German) as pets and their requirements. I am interested in getting a pair of those cute rodents as household pets and read about them quite a lot, to figure out proper cage / terrarium size and so on. Equipped with my newly acquired knowledge I've purchased a cage of size 60 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm with two levels, thus ~90l of space, while the sources I've found recommend ~37l (10 gallon) volume per pair of gerbils (sources: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals...l_housing.html http://www.egerbil.com/housing.html http://www.thegerbils.com/maintenance1aqua.htm
Then I've happily went to a pet store to get the animals, but was refused, on the condition that my cage is to small - store advice is to get at least 100 cm long cage, preferably on their premises. Now, I thought it was just a way to get me to buy more equipment from them, but the situation repeated in another store + I was informed a fine could be issued for not appropriate conditions in which animals would be held. Thus, my question is, is any of you aware on where I could find some official Swiss guidelines / regulations about animal welfare? I would love to provide good home to the animals, but at the moment I have a feeling that those two pet stores just want to force me to buy their expensive equipment (~150 - 200 CHF per cage). I would appreciate any advice on this matter.
