EU travel by car with dogs

Hello informatiion rich forum members!

Does anyone have experience travelling by car from Switzerland to Portugal (via France and Spain) with dogs? I have reviewed the official regulations on the BLV website, so just looking for first hand experience. And maybe more info on the French, Spanish and Portuguese regulations. It seems (?) the EU has uniform rules throughout (with a few exceptions for tapeworm in certain countries).

My other question is what is required for an "authorized person" to travel with the dogs? eg. not me the owner but my friend will take the dogs. I understand it has to be in writing, but is this just something I can write and print out at home? I have tried asking the Zurich Kantonal vet but I think I'm lost in translation

Re: EU travel by car with dogs

I've done it quite a few times. Just bring the Pet Passport (and make sure everything is up to date) and you'll be good to go. Honestly, the only people who have ever asked to see the Passport have been our vet here and the kennels here.

Most hotels in France accept dogs. Not as many in Spain do though so check in advance.

Thanks for the info!

Do you know if any other vaccinations other than rabies are actually required by law?

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Anthony - but unfortunately I'm no longer au fait with EU travel. (We can no longer vac Hooligan due to her epilepsy, so we cannot travel outside Switzerland. My personal experience is now outdated.

That said, here is a link to each of the EU member states' websites. Finella, you should go directly to the source with your questions:

http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/live...tferret_en.htm

I see that the Portugal page is under construction - nonetheless, it gives contact details for the ministry of agriculture, the relevant authority in Portugal.

And general info on inter-EU travel:

http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/live...m_intra_en.htm

Gute Reise!

(Do I remember that you have docked dogs? If so, make sure you research whether or not that affects your travel to Portugal, and make sure you have your original import papers to allow you to return to Switzerland.)

Re: EU travel by car with dogs

Some years ago I drove to Spain with our dogs. Took the pet passports but nobody asked to see them.

As said do check the hotels will take dogs.

I was surprised that most Spanish restaurants did not allow dogs unlike in France. Of course in warm weather you sit outside anyway.

Re: EU travel by car with dogs

Thanks again everyone!
I do have the official stamps from Zurich Kanton that allows my docked dogs back into CH
Now I just need to double/triple check any other reqts for Spain, France and Portugal. Although I just keep seeing: 1) rabies vax, 2) microchip, 3) pet passport....which all 3 I have up to date for each dog.

And make some type of letter that authorizes my friend to take the dog with her.
