Doggy Update

Call me bonkers, but Mrs TD and I recently acquired another rescue dog to keep our existing rescue dog (Schotty) company. The tierheim where we got Lucy said she was found with a puppy and was about 4 years old... She seems to be a Viszla mix.

Fast forward a month or three, Lucy has turned out to be [a] much younger than we were told (the vet estimates she's about 2 years old) and [b] because she had to survive on the streets, she has "issues" (primarily with cyclists and strangers). Soon after we got her, Mrs TD visited friends with Schotty and I had a weekend alone with Lucy. I spent one evening with her snuggled up to me on the sofa, sharing a bag of unsalted pistachios, watching TV as I stroked her and generally reassured her that she was now "safe" (I know full well dogs won't understand the words, but will understand the feelings behind the words)

Although she still has "issues" (and I am training her to take a muzzle - primarily for her safety), underneath it all she is a very sweet, loving little dog and whilst Mrs TD and I love 'em both, Lucy is very much "my" dog, whilst Schotty is "hers".

Here is a picture of the two miscreants

Lucy is on the left.

I really must be bonkers.....

Re: Doggy Update

Thats great TD, they seem very happy with you. I would also love to take in a dog, but our 14 (ex stray) cats are against the idea. Keep up the good work.

Salut Zämma

Re: Doggy Update

Good on you,

I got 3 rescues myself from 3 different countries. 2 of them still have issues...with strangers but I guess that comes with it.... . But they are the sweetest and I swear they know that they were rescued..... .

Best of luck with the pups

Re: Doggy Update

Congratulations, TD!

My goodness, Lucy certainly is a beauty. Good on ya (and Mrs TD and Schotty) for opening your hearts and home to this lovely girl. Sounds like she is in the best of hands now.

Here's to many years of happiness, filled with good times shared.

Alas Schotty was not really happy at the time of the photo. Poor Schotty is wearing his "I'm a poor abused doggie" look - I had just told him off for grabbing/stealing his ball from my hand (and giving me a nasty nip in the process).

To come clean - when he is "told off", he does get a verbal bollocking! But Mrs TD and I believe in only using positive reinforcement (bad behaviours are just ignored [unless we have to pull him/her away to stop him/her doing something - like eating something dubious]), positive behaviours are rewarded with praise and treats.

Incidentally, Schotty's "I'm a poor abused doggie" act is part of a two act play he performs for guests. At first, he begs for food at the table with his "I'm a poor starving doggie" look; then, when he is told off for begging ("Schotty: GO basket!") he recites act II: "I'm a poor starving, abused, doggie".

But I wouldn't trade either of them for all the tea in China

TD

Rescues all have that face.

Busted being on the table and then the others on the couch

Re: Doggy Update

Just love the facial expressions ("it ain't us wot done it") of your beautiful furbabies! Thank you and your wife for opening your hearts to a stray dog - they are all worth their weight in gold as far as I am concerned!

Much happiness to all your family, humans and canines
