Courses for Horses

As there are courses you need to do to own & work with dogs here in Switzerland, I assume there must also be similar regulations and courses for horses!? Anyone know what they all are? Do they apply to all horses/ponies/donkeys?

Thanks

Courses for horses? ..... If there are courses, then they're more likely to be for the owner/rider, I would have thought - probably covering a few different aspects and you just need to choose ..... a case of horses for courses.

Re: Courses for Horses

Haha, yes I mean for the owner/worker.

For example I know there is a specific course you must do to own a dog and specific courses to dog sit/walk or if you want to care for dogs. Surely there are similar set courses you must do for horses?

Re: Courses for Horses

Caveat:

I know very little about horses.

That said...

Roughly:
As of 1 Sept 2008, anyone keeping more than 5 horses must take an SKN-Pferde course. For commercial keeping of more than 11 horses, an FBA course is required. Farmers are excepted.

More info on the BLV website:
http://www.blv.admin.ch/themen/tiers...x.html?lang=de

See especially the link 'Ausbildungsanforderungen für die Pferdehaltung'.

And more on horse ownership from the BLV's somewhat more user-friendly 'Mein Heimtier' site:
http://www.meinheimtier.ch/de/pferde

Now over to the EF equine experts...

Re: Courses for Horses

From what I can see there Meloncollie and Island Monkey if you have fewer than 5 horses you don't need to take any courses.

Haras run the courses so you could think about doing it anyway.

Agroscope
Haras national suisse HNS
Les Longs-Prés
Case Postale 191
CH-1580 Avenches

Tel: +41 58 482 61 11
Fax: +41 58 482 63 05
E-Mail (lien externe, nouvelle fenêtre)

http://www.agroscope.admin.ch/haras/...x.html?lang=fr

You could find out when they next have a course on offer near your location.

Or contact the BLV and ask them.

info@blv.admin.ch

I've always found them to be very helpful in answering my queries.

Re: Courses for Horses

Thanks guys!

I'm trying to see the logic behind having to do a course to have a dog.... But not a horse ... The only thing I can think of is maybe they don't expect people with no experience to go and buy a horse!?

Because horses don't generally live in the cities or bite people. Unless you happen be a child feeding it a sugar cube with your hand half-closed that is. I'm not sure who was more surprised at the sight of blood, me or the horse!

Dog ownership - and public perception of dogs/dog owners - changed after Oberglatt (2005). There hasn't been an incident of that magnitude with horses/horse owners.

Re: Courses for Horses

you dont need any courses to own a horse, but I strongly recommend having a bit of experience when getting an own horse or at least have knowledgable trainers at your side from the beginning. there are so many things to think about starting with nutrition, hoove care, illness, what kind of stable etc etc, most things one only realizes when the horse is actually there
It is an animal and needs to get the care and attention as per Tierschutzgesetz and its personal needs.
