Dog Owners: A request from ProNatura

Just a heads-up for dog owners as you hike along streams and rivers, from an NZZ article:

http://www.nzz.ch/panorama/alltagsge...ere-1.18555338

ProNatura is asking owners to keep their dogs on lead /under close control when walking along streams and rivers in the evenings and early mornings, as this is the time of year/ time of day when very young beaver kits will be out. The kits cannot protect themselves from predators at this stage, and might not yet be fully adept swimmers.

The endangered European beaver has been re-introduced to Switzerland, but the population is vulnerable, especially the young.

I had no idea this is an endangered species, I've seen a group of maybe 10 of them somewhere in Baden-Württemberg, by a brook....just two weeks ago. They were cute. Should have taken pictures..

More importantly, otters that have been absent in SWitzerland for over 100 years and are making a very slow return- which is pretty wonderful, and are breeding this year.

Several beavers have recently been destroyed in Liechtenstein where they are not protected- as they were undermining a river dike- shame they didn't try to trap them and relocate them

Perfect time of the year to go badger watching- there is a sett in the woods behind our house, will ask our Danish guests next week if they'd like to join me. Those badgers visit out field most night, and have grubbed up and latrine marked all along the stone wall- but we've never caught sight of them

Looks like I'm wrong. They are not currently endangered, but the population is still vulnerable.

The European beaver was hunted to near-extinction, but have been successfully reintroduced and the numbers are growing. More here:

Let's give those Biberbabys a break, fellow dog walkers.

Technically, I'd have thought that any beaver kits that come up against dogs on Swiss river banks probably are fairly endangered...

If my wimper of a dog was to meet a badger, kit or adult, I'd be more worried for my dog! She has the hunting instinct of a zucchini, and was midly scared of our guinea pigs...
