Looking for a cat sitter in Zurich

Hello,

My husband and I are heading home for 10 days in the end of July. Has anyone used certain pet sitters that they liked? Any feedback would be appreciated!
Thank you!

Re: Looking for a cat sitter in Zurich

A HUGE PLEA TO ALL ANIMAL 'OWNERS' (well we know they own us , but ...) if you are planning to go away in July, August, over Christmas and New Year or Easter
make arrangements for your pets EARLY ...

all refuges and pet sitting services and kennels/cattery around here are absolutely FULL for the holidays, and the chances of finding someone to look after your pets are slim or non-existent.

To the OP, hope you find a good home for your cat.

Is the petsitting network on here still active?

Depends on the people. Few years old offers obviously won't be up to date, but the newest.. worth sending a private message or two.

I would also recommend posting a notice at the Irchel UZH by the Mensa (cafeteria) of the Tierspital (Veterinary Hospital) - there are a lot of students who are happy to make some extra money during the summer (and bonus, they probably like animals!).

Re: Looking for a cat sitter in Zurich

I found few cat hotels, and most of them are around 30CHF per night with no discount for long leaves over 3-4 weeks. It becomes quite pricey.
I would take my cat to a cat hotel out of the city if I could save money. Any recommendations?

CHF 20-35 is a normal price for a cat hotel in Switzerland, private care goes up from there. Pet care here is indeed expensive.

That said...

I am not a cat owner, and I don't use a Tierheim for my dogs' holiday care - so please take this more as information rather than a recommendation. With that in mind, you might want to look into Tierheim Surber in Zürich by Hongg.
http://www.tierheim-surber.ch/pension.html

I adopted one of my dogs from this Tierheim. He was at the shelter for about three months and clearly he was well cared for both physically and mentally during this time. I spent a lot of time at the Tierheim during the adoption process and came away with a good impression.

(I don't know if they have any availability at this late date.)

Re: Looking for a cat sitter in Zurich

Some advice for people looking for cat/pet sitters...

Instead of looking for people to come over to your house once a day to feed/water/pet - which is a bit of a hassle for little reward - try looking for someone who will look after your pet in their own home. Market it as "borrow my pet" or something. Make sure you provide all the food, litter, tray, scratching post etc and I bet you'll get plenty of volunteers.

There are a number of people who, like me, love cats but cant have a pet of their own whatever reason. I'm totally psyched if someone will bring their cat to stay with me for a week or two. And my "cat hotel" is far better than anything you will find for 20-30CHF per night and its totally free!

I'd love to see such a "borrow my pet" thread (as opposed to pet sitting) going on this forum. I'd borrow a cat whenever I was able! (sorry - I'm away in July)

EDIT: Sorry - I actually see the "pet sitting network" is already kind of geared towards this.

Alternatively, look for a house-sitter. There are plenty of excellent house-sitting websites with people who do nothing but travel from country-to-country house-sitting and looking after pets. You can choose from people with plenty of references and you won't have to pay them anything, since they get to live in your apartment while you are away. I'm sure there's someone out there who wouldn't mind a week or two in Zurich for the summer.

Eventhough this seems like a greeeeaaat idea, it may not make sense with cats for a period shorter than 3 or 4 weeks.
Cats are territorial and will need time to adjust.

It may work though if they go to someone they already know . May be worth trying ... (speaking for myself here! )
