Where to let my dog run free in Basel?

The boy is stretching his legs and needs to run free, however it seems line free areas are limited, certainly in the city.
Amongst the many places I've visited, two places that stand out are:
Lange Erlen (the banks of the Weise) which is pretty much perfect for a dog, no roads, plenty of woods and grass, an accessible river and a lot of dog interaction.
The Birs, an accessible river, lots of dogs, plenty of space to run off, not as expansive as Lange Erlen, bordered in places by roads.
In a week or so his rabies jab is 'valid' for France and he'll be up and down the Petite Camargue canal.
Are there any other areas in/near Basel to let a dog run free?
I was told about Sankt Margarethen by Bruderholz, but upon inspection (by bike, no dog) it seems to be some fields left to grass by the farmer, so not sure if the dogs are allowed on them or not.
All suggestions (apart from 'feck arf!') much appreciated.

Here he is in the Hallwilersee yesterday, swims like a dolphin, albeit a furry one.

I don't know Basel so I am afraid I can't help you there...

... but I couldn't just read and run without commenting on what a very handsome lad Bruno is growing into. How old is the furry little dolphin now?

As for farm fields:

Many fields 'left to grass' are actually growing a hay crop. If that is what this field is, then it is generally best not to let him play there - especially once the hay is cut and drying in the field prior to baling.

Aside from protecting the farmer's crop a reason to keep dogs out of hay fields is that a common fertilizer used is liquid compost - sometimes including grape slurry from the vineyards. Grape is toxic to many dogs; in fact a few years ago there was a tragedy near Höngg. So hay crop or not, if a field has been recently sprayed keep your pup out. Fortunately farmers tend to fertilize just before it rains so the compost gets thoroughly watered in.

Best thing to do is to ask the farmer if you see him out and about. If the field is truly fallow he likely wouldn't mind.

Good luck with your quest.

He is all of 15 weeks now, still a lovely little boy.
Welpen school has already finished and Junghunde classes have commenced.
