Proper dog pee zones in Basel

I'm looking after a friend's dog at the moment and this morning I took him for a walk. He did as he I assume normally does and peed on a bush next to the footpath. A guy instantly comes out and starts yelling at me that this isn't allowed and when I ask him where are dogs supposed to pee he says on the road while pointing to a narrow busy street. I tell him that all dogs pee here (I've seen many that have) to which he pretty much starts off on a string of vulgarities ending by telling me to leave the country (OK, admittedly my German isn't that great).

I was furious when it happened, especially since I've been subject of a few often obviously racist or completely stupid outbursts while biking recently. But after calming down a bit I do realise CH is full of pretty unusual regulations and since I've dealt with the guy before and he does actually seem fairly reasonable, I'd like to give him the benefit of a doubt and check wether or not I am in the wrong.

So, where is a dog supposed to pee in Basel?

Re: Proper dog pee zones in Basel

This thread might give you some insights into the issue:

Is this normal? Our dog in a "wohnquartier".

Essentially, the complainer has legit grounds if you allowed the dog to urinate on other people's property, or on common property in a residential area.

Dog owners (and those who have temporarily taken on that responsibility) have to get a bit creative if one does not have a private garden.

I would assume the dog's owner has already figured out where the 'non-objectionable' areas in the neighborhood are - get in touch with the dog's owner and ask where he normally takes his dog for the daily constitutional. If you can't get in touch with the owner, just look around for other dog walkers in the neighborhood and ask.

Yes, right outside of a shop he works at, though not at the front but down a side street. I think he was moving some stuff in through the back door.

Admittedly the pup did pee quite a bit, but he was hardy peeing on anyone's porch or on anyone's garden - literally some weeds though a bit perhaps got on the footpath.

I'll just chalk it up to another mean spirited outburst

Thanks for the information and the interesting thread. We're in a different neighbourhood so we won't be walking around the same territory. From what my friend said, we just ought to keep off private property and pick up poo. The area where he peed was definitely public property rather than private.

Good advice about talking to other dog owners. I'm starting to be more aware that there are official regulations and then there are personal expectations, some people seem to mix them up. I guess talking to other owners will at least let me know where the oversensitive people are.
