Buying pets from [online ads] BEWARE

Hi everyone,
A quick heads up. I recently purchased 2 ragdoll cats from a very reputable breeder in Germany, for example, she wanted a face to face meeting, a Skype meeting and I had to fetch cats in person. She also only gave the cats away at 16 weeks.
In my quest to find the perfect breeder I came across SO many ragdoll adverts on Ricardo and other online Swiss advertising sites. Adverts were in German and showed individual photos of the cats and prices etc. Turns out it was a SCAM from Cameroon! I notified all the ad agencies but after removal, they were put up again. Beware! If they are willing to ship the dog or cat to you without meeting you in person or Skype, its liklely a scam.

According to Ricardo.ch's Terms of Sales, offering live animals for sale is prohibited:

"3.22 Tiere und Pflanzen
Es ist verboten, in Angeboten auf ricardo.ch lebendeTiere jeglicher Rasse und Zucht anzubieten (auch Welpen, Kätzchen etc.)." (see p. 15 at this link):

https://www.ricardo.ch/ueber-uns/Por...tsliste_DE.pdf

Also, I just looked at Ricardo.ch and found no advertisements for live cats (although about 25 pages of accessories for cats). Could you kindly provide a link to these Ricardo.ch advertisements? Thank you.

Re: Buying pets from Ricardo BEWARE

Oh sorry, it was Tutti and Tierinserate - I recently sold a lot of stuff on Ricardo and its fresh in my mind.

Looks like the recent Ragdoll ads have been removed again. BUT here is an example of Bengal cats from a few years ago, but they are still at it. The Ragdoll ad was based out of Geneva and they "worked at the UN".

Re: Buying pets from Ricardo BEWARE

A timely reminder, ZollikofenSW.

The free ads are littered with battery farmers and scams. Serious breeders do not advertise there.

Battery farmers, scammers, the 'pet mafia' - these bar stewards are very active in Switzerland, as there so many naive buyers here. This despite all the campaigns to educate people as to the pitfalls when buying an animal. Purchasing from a battery farmer adds to the endless cycle of abuse - don't do it. Battery farmers pose both as breeders and rescues - eyes wide open, folks!

The place to look for a pet is either from a reputable breeder or a reputable rescue.

The place to start looking for a reputable dog breeder is with the breed club of the SKG or the FCI member club in other countries. (I'm not a cat person, so I'll leave where to start looking for reputable cat breeders to those who know more than I do.)

The place to start looking for a rescue animal of any species is the Tierschutzdatenbank, the Switzerland-wide listing of homeless animals.

http://www.tierdatenbank.ch/cms/tier...unschtier.html

Please, folks - research before buying! The only way to stop the vile trade in battery farmed pets, the only way to stop the scammers, is to keep well away.

Re: Buying pets from Ricardo BEWARE

Unless you have the necessary contacts already, the goto address should be either the local Tierschutzverein or the local animal-type specific association like Kynologischer Verein in case of dogs.

The Tierschutzverein most always have abandoned animals looking for a place, and if you're looking for a breeder they now from experience who's reputable and who isn't.

If you can't find a Tierschutzverein ask an animal doctor near you for directions.
