Puppies tossed over fence into Tierhiem ordered euthanized.

What a sad story:

http://www.20min.ch/schweiz/zuerich/story/17057899

Two young puppies were tossed over the fence at a Tierheim - presumably the owner didn't even have the decency to hand them in properly. The puppies appeared to be normal happy playful puppies - and the Tierheim thought they would find good homes.

It's interesting that many of the reader comments run along the lines of excusing the owner, "'could have been worse, at least they were abandoned where someone would help them".

But it turned out to be worse indeed:

http://www.20min.ch/schweiz/zuerich/...efert-27399031

The Veterinäramt ordered the puppies to be euthanized, as they suspect that they came from abroad without vaccination against rabies. Despite the Tierheim's efforts to convince the authorities otherwise, the puppies have now been killed.

The article does not say how the Veterinämt knows that the pups were not born in Switzerland, but for anyone working in rescue this is worrying.

Why oh why didn't the evil barstewards who dumped the puppies simply hand them in to the shelter properly?

---

On the same topic, recently the Zürich Obergericht ruled in two cases that abandoning an animal at the door of a Tierheim is prosecutable. Previously this action was often overlooked when the animal usually was found quickly and came to no harm. But in these cases leaving an animal at a Tierheim without properly handing him in has been deemed abandonment. From the Tier Im Recht article:

Do people who leave babies in the baby boxes get prosecuted?

Sorry Mel, but unless you have a picture of the dead cute puppies that we can have placed on the front page of the newspapers and cluttering up social media for a few days this story will go by unnoticed.

No - that use of the Babyfenster does not constitute abandonment was specifically written into the law when the Babyfenster was permitted. At least that is the case in Einsiedeln.

And honestly the two situations are not comparable. The Babyfenster is monitored 24/7/365. When one leaves a baby in the window a signal sounds IIRC 3 minutes after the hatch closes. This allows the mother time to leave to preserve anonymity, but the baby is not endangered by being left alone.

A Tierheim, on the otherhand, generally is not staffed overnight, staff are generally only on premises during the business hours. An animal tied to the gate could be there 12-15 hours before anyone finds him. Long enough for an animal to freeze to death in the cold, become ill, distressed or self-harm from fright, or become a victim of passers-by animal or human.

---

Legally every dog in Switzerland must be chipped by latest 3 months from the date of birth or prior to importation into Switzerland.

I wonder if the fact that these puppies were estimated to be four months old and unchipped was the reason they were thought to have been illegally imported?

Whatever the reason, very sad story.

Re: Puppies tossed over fence into Tierhiem ordered euthanized.

Very sad story. How animals have to suffer through mankind`s cruelty.

I guess they were cute when they were very small, and then they lost their cuteness? Or began to want to explore so became a nuisance? Or just were not salable?

Recently I had to witness (from a distance) a person whom I (used to) have respect for, do something which showed me that some people are capable of inhuman acts, to satisfy their own selfish needs/wants.

This person wanted a "special" cat. One that lived only indoors. The Tierheim would not allow them to adopt for that reason. So they found a private person who sold them 2 cats - mother and son (Sfr1,000) each.

They were cats that had never experienced the outdoors - perfect.

But then 2 cats became a nuisance (too much work in keeping clean, and lifestyle changed so not enough time to care for them both), so the older one was given away.

Knowing holidays were planned I asked what would happen to the cat in empty house? "Oh I`ll get rid of him by then, and meanwhile I`ll give him lots of love". In other words, discarded when no longer required?

I saw this cat once, come out the door, and creep along the ground, terrified of fresh air, sniffing and shuddering when it heard noises - reminded me of a video I`d seen of rescued laboratory dogs.

Sorry, but I do not believe in an animal having to live in indoor captivity.
Or kept and given away like an unwanted toy.

At least, if an animal must live indoors, have some provision where it can experience contact with the earth? Cats can learn to walk on a lead.

Dumping a pet or giving it away so that one can go on holiday happens all too often, yes even in Switzerland.

Another article from Tier Im Recht (who do brilliant work for our furry, finned, and feathered friends):

http://www.tierimrecht.org/de/news/2.../Aussetzen.php

Roughly:

Abandoned animals are not uncommon, especially in the summer months. The owner wants to travel in the holidays and does not want to put the pet into a Pension or has left it too late to find an appropriate place. Many pets are then simply left on their own, putting them under enormous stress and in danger.

Abandoning or leaving an animal behind is not only irresponsible, but also fulfills the criteria for an offense of cruelty to animals, and would result in a fine or imprisonment up to three years.

My first thought when I read the article:

For chrissakes if you're going to leave pets at the shelter at least get them chipped before you do so (yes, to keep you from weaseling out of responsibility) and THINK BEFORE YOU PURCHASE

As for this

what are the dogs supposed to be - grateful?!!!!!!

I hope the poor pooches found peace on the other side of the rainbow.

Thanks Meloncollie for posting this thread. I saw it a couple days ago but refrained from posting because I'd posted about those two other b****ds and the cats.

Re: Puppies tossed over fence into Tierhiem ordered euthanized.

Perhaps someone brought them over from abroad hoping to sell- and didn't so ditched them. Even on this Forum people are prepared to buy cheap from abroad without proper checks or provenance- so what hope is there...

How horrible! Some people should never have pets to begin with.
