Quite a large baby bird found - need advice!

Hi,

I am house sitting for a month near coppet and my dog found quite a large junenile bird, but still really a fledgling, hiding out under a bush this morning. I dont think the resident dog really took notice of her, so im not convinced she was only abandoned today. She could have been there a while.

I know the general advice is to leave them, but since i dont really know how long she has been there, i am kind of loathe to leave her tonight for the cats to eat. I will though, just in case its too soon to mess with it. We saw her this morning but she was still in the same place this evening and i think i should take some action.

I made her something of a protective warm cave with some firewood, trying not to touch her, but was wondering if anyone knows a good place i could take her tomorrow if she makes it through the night?

By the way, i really dont know my birds at all, but she is not a sparrow size - probably not a seagull or anything from around here, but she's a very decent size for a scrappy fledgling, almost like a bag of sugar. I know there are hawks around Vaud everywhere but i dont know where they nest, so its a jump to assume what she might be.

Thanks for some advice! SPA?

You are a member since 2007 and should have known that you should have written DOG instead of bird to get good advice and emphatic reactions.

Nobody here gives a f**k about birds, cat, mice etc

Yes, good idea - was a bit dark last night but this morning she is still alive.

I was thinking maybe she is a dove?

That's extremely useful - thank you. I am going to call the Bellevue number at 10am and see what they say. I hope they can take her in - I will let you know the updates of the bird, er, i mean ... cute puppy dog.

I would have thought it is a very young crow or raven, but the images here makes me wonder otherwise:

Any updates?

Re: Quite a large baby bird found - need advice!

Hi,

OK, there's a conclusion to the story and another beginning.

I called the number you provided and the nearest place I could take it was the Centre Ornithologique de Readaption in Gentod, which is about a 20 minutes drive from here. I had put the bird into a box overnight and got him there , and they identified him as a baby pidgeon!! She did a quick exam and it seems that she had a broken wing so they will keep her and I have a reference number to find out any updates in the next few weeks.

Unfortunately, my GPS went nuts on the way back and it took me an hour ... but when I got back I saw a flapping mother pidgeon on the lawn trying to nudge ANOTHER baby into the brush ... I left them to it but later I saw the baby hiding in the bush. I guess the nest must have ben destroyed or something, so I left him as long as I could but once it got dark, I put him into a box and dropped the bird place another message - I will leave him outside the door tomorrow morning - they only open at 8.30 but I have to work, so he will be there early doors! Im not sure he has a broken wing, but he does look very scrappy and I think he wouldn't survive the night if I didn't put him somewhere.

Thanks for your advice on the right number to call - I know now what to do when I find a baby bird around here

This is not easy- but if the youngster was with mum- I would have left well alone, but provided a bowl of water nearby and possibly a little cat food.

Re: Quite a large baby bird found - need advice!

Why would you want to give cat food to a bird? Birds ARE cat food...

Birds generally love eating mealworms (Mehlwurm, ver de farine).
You get them at animal shops, dead or alive, as food for birds and reptiles, and as fishing bait.

Try contacting voliere in zurich, here is the link.
http://voliere.ch/

They can help injured birds, or babies that have fallen from the nest.

Because that is the official advice given, if on a Sunday you can't get to a shop with mealworm- that + water. And to leave a baby fallen off the nest if it is with mother, even if at risk- unless clearly injured. I worked as a volunteer with a wildlife group in the UK for over 30 years.
