Music for Cats

Nice article in the NYT, for those who haven't seen it yet:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/01/st...avid-teie.html

"Young rescue cats ... are generally the most responsive to the music, Mr. Snowdon (emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who worked on the project) said, adding that the more-calming tracks could be therapeutic for cats who have experienced neglect or abuse."

Re: Music for Cats

These people have been making music for cats for sometime now.

https://www.youtube.com/user/relaxmycat

They claim:
♫ Relax My Cat uses binaural technology designed to relax and calm your cat. If your cat has sleeping problems or anxiety problems or is even stressed during construction, fireworks or other loud noises, you should try our music.
♫ Use music to help your cats or kittens instead of opting for medication. Relax My Cat music has helped millions of cats, and animals worldwide to sleep and reduce their anxiety overall.
♫ Relax my cat is music designed specially for cats who may suffer from stress, anxiety, separation anxiety, or any trouble relaxing or falling asleep. It can also help for any cats that may have been through trauma or injuries.

I thought it was gimmicky, turns out there may be something there?

A binaural beat always requires separation of left and right channels. So you need to use headphones, to be sure that the tones for one ear do not go into the other.

It can work without headphones if the stereo speakers are evenly placed left and right of the cat, but it won't be as effective.

Soooo, I am not sure that their claim is accurate.

Careful, you'll get someone reporting you to the RSPCA for cruelty if you do that.

Weee'll... did run it by my neighbours cat this evening, and she also thinks the clip may have been doctored a little.

Re: Music for Cats

I don't know about liking music... but my Tabitha had a great dislike for Strictly Come Dancing. As soon as the theme music started, she would get up and walk out of the room!

On the other hand, she could identify the Skype ring tone as 'my human is going to be sitting still for at least half an hour and will have time to cuddle me' music and would invariably jump onto my lap whenever I had a Skype call.

My brother's cat also recognises the Skype ring tone... but she runs away and hides.

Re: Music for Cats

My present cat likes a certain wellknown Dutch singer named Frank Boeijen.
Moreover, when I play the piano he runs away and sits outside for half an hour. When my partner plays the piano he stays inside and continues to sleep.
