Cat harness in car - legal in CH?

I bought a couple of these for my cats but someone who lives in Italy said that the Swiss authorities would still ticket me because cats have to be in an actual carrier.

Does anyone know? The harness is very secure and while they can walk around a tiny bit, they cannot move that much.

Your friend in Italy is very wrong. No restraint is legally required, but the animal must not interfere with the controls, nor the driver.

Re: Cat harness in car - legal in CH?

We use a similar harness for our dog, albeit with a very strong, impact-tested connection to the seat belt. We were told by our SKN trainer that was an acceptable restraint (when he was small, we could also put him in the well by the feet of the passenger) as he just had to be prevented from becoming a projectile in the event of an accident.

Since then, we've been stopped once by the police for a routine traffic check. They actually tugged at the harness to ensure it was secure, then gave us the green light. So you should be good with a cat in a similar harness, though I've no idea what kind of force that one can withstand.

A harness is acceptable. The floor is not. It is particularly dangerous if there is an airbag. There was an EF member who was given a ticket for having his dog on the floor in front of the passenger seat.

I've just been sent a fine of CHF 470.- because our dog was in the foot well of the passenger side of the car with my wife keeping hold of her. The Police didn't even know if there was a law against this at the time that they stopped me. So they decided to make a note and send the Details to a judge to find out if I should be fined!

Floor would definitely be a bad idea with a cat, chances are there's a gap behind the console it could squeeze through and end up under the pedals.

Choice of squashing the cat or breaking properly isn't one I'd like to have on the autobahn.

I was thinking more of the back seat where there is no airbag but there are buckles. Thanks for all the responses! Shared knowledge is wonderful.

Re: Cat harness in car - legal in CH?

Our cockatoo has a harness. However, in the car she is in a special travel cage which is airline approved. She only weighs 500 grams and she is safer in a cage. There she does not interfere with the driver (unless you take into consideration that she is a very vocal backseat driver.)

Personally I would not travel with a cat in a harness, only in a travel crate.

Harness is perfectly legal, as long as it is secure and will not allow the cat to move around the car and interfere with safety, and will stop said cat from being projected forwards in an accident, hard breaking.

Easier said than done, I'm afraid. I never would put cats or even dogs into a simple harness, because it doesn't provide any real protection against even low-impact crashes. Mine were always in hard-sided carriers (with padding for comfort) placed on the floor of the back seat. Never on the seat itself, and never in the front.

To get an idea of what could happen to your pet depending on what you use for restraint/protection, check out some of these videos:

Agreed- talking about the legality of it rather than the safety.

The dog in the harness looked better off to me than many of the ones in the crates! In any case, the bottom of that site recommends crates or harnesses for larger dogs, as long as you get one of the top-performing ones. I didn't read enough of it to know why they don't recommend a harness for little dogs.

Edit: this is the one we use, by the way. http://www.centerforpetsafety.org/te...lsafe-harness/
