we lost our little man in fur today

we lost our little man in fur today
Dear all, I need a little help. I'm so sad and unfortunately don't have many friends here since we are quite isolated.

Sadly our dear gentle giant, a sweet main coon cat of 13 years passed away quietly this morning. My husband and I both felt it was important to honor his life and stand by him without turning to the quickest easiest solution despite being under significant stress elsewhere in our lives . So I've cared for him in a palliative care setting at home. In the end fortunately we were able to spend some quality time together to say our goodbyes. Despite this I second guess myself, wondering if I left it too late? I'm wondering if I was too selfish, not easily able to let him go? Yesterday I went to comfort him and as my hand was passing over his paw he grabbed my finger gently with the claws of one of his paws, he held my finger for the longest time. I now realize it was his way to say goodbye, it was Sunday and I didnít know what to do. I sent our tierarzt an email but by the time she finally replied he was perking up again after accepting water by syringe without any fights. And he kept showing me he still had the fight in him, the will to live so I decided it would be best to wait until today to see if he could come around again.

He put up a brave fight over the past couple of months but today he just couldnít carry on any longer and this morning when I found him lying flat out in the early predawn hours I picked him up I took him to bed with me while we waited for the vet to open. We cuddled and both fell in and out of sleep together, him resting his head on my arm purring occasionally, perhaps he was loosing consciousness, at one point I woke up wondering if he was still breathing, he wagged his tail to my gentle touch and rested his head on my arm again. By 10 am our vet opened and I took him to her, he didnít have any fear or fight when it came time, she helped him to go his way gently into cat heaven.

The difficult situation is that my husband too is not well either, he's been in the hospital for an extended time and now booked for surgery in the morning. I'm feeling quite overwhelmed at the moment and looking for a little support. We have no children and our gentle giant was our baby. Obviously I need to go through the grieving process but also need to quickly muster up the strength to be there for my husband to try to help him with his recovery. So please any suggestions to help me keep my chin up would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for your loss. Surely cat is in a better heavenly place without suffering. You have done what you could and importantly you were there for him. I would focus on husband's surgery and his speedy recovery afterwards. All will go well and you will soon relax together celebrating X-mas and NYE2016. My fingers crossed ...

Re: we lost our little man in fur today

It sounds like you did the right thing in helping his on his way, sacrificing that for a few more painful days of time with him. We lost our beautiful Somali cat 2 years ago at the age of 4, it was meant to be a routine operation to remove an obstruction but he never woke up from the anaesthetic. His cat flap is a lasting reminder as we still can't bring ourselves to get another. Time will heal, helped by your happy memories.

Best wishes for you and your husband.

Very sorry for your loss. We lost our pug on Dec 17 last year and we know how difficult it is, especially with the holidays around the corner. Just keep yourself occupied and as cliched as it sounds, it will get better.

Good luck with the surgery.

I'm so very sorry.

Our pets are such a huge part of our lives, and take a piece of our hearts with them when they go.

I hope that the memories of all the good times you and your cat shared will bring you comfort at this sad time.

Wishing you and your husband all the very best, especially with his recovery.

So sorry to hear that. Those little creatures really tug at our heart strings so- and this even more when loved humans are suffering too and away from home and family. Take care, and hope your husband will make a good recovery- and that, in time, you can find another great cat friend. (((hugs)))

We lost our Great Gatsby earlier this year, and Slinky and Pudding are both 16- so ...

Feel for you... I sorely miss my Camilla, and she departed a snowy december morning 5 years ago and for many reasons never had the inner strength to welcome another purryful being in my home.

Big hugs

Paul

So sorry that you have lost your fur baby. I have been where you are a few times and really feel for you.
I do hope your husband soon recovers and you can have him back home with you.
Your beloved cat will always be in your heart, eventually you will be able to remember him and all the fun moments you had with him with a smile.
Remember there are people thinking about you, hope that gives you a little strength to get you through.
Hugs.

I am so sorry for your loss of your fur child. That is so hard. I pray for you to find peace during this time. I know exactly how you feel as I lost one of my fur babies this year and it is terrible. Sending you tons of love and support. Sending healing, healthy energy to your husband too.

Blessings,

I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss. It's probably little consolation but you clearly gave your fur baby the absolute best life he could have had and you were with him when it absolutely mattered. You will always have that - that and the amazing memories you have of him.

My thoughts are with you and your husband. I wish him a speedy recovery and peace of mind for both of you.

With every good wish,
Rufus

You said you don't have children but if you did you'd be such a wonderful mother, the way you show your feelings about your pet is very touching. My dog's life is also almost over, I know it will be the same. I hope your husband's health improves as that isn't helping you to be strong, so just to let you know, someone you don't know is thinking of you.

So very sorry but for what it's worth, your cat sounds like he had a wonderful life with you and in the end, you did right by him at the end, no matter how hard it was for you. I'm sure he'd want to thank you for a wonderful life shared if he could. All the very best for you and your husband. Hugs.

Re: we lost our little man in fur today

You all are truly amazing. I was feeling a bit despondent and lost and you showed me the strength of this online. community Honestly over the past few years you've all taught me so much. Some times I've cried with you and felt a loss of words to know how to reach out myself and find the right words of support.I've learned a lot about my own prejudices, learned to face inborn and biases that I didn't even know I had and learned to challenge myself. Sometimes some of you have made me laugh so hard I've found myself rolling on the ground in uncontrollable fits so much it hurt, such joy in all that! Best of all over these past couple of days with all the support and love you've shared with me you've all taught me compassion and for that I'm very deeply grateful.

My husband is doing well post surgery and I hope to bring him home this weekend so fingers crossed there.

I've added a couple pictures of the gentle giant. Yes he had a good life, totally spoiled and it was an honor to be part of it.

Thanks for all your help and support; I'm deeply touched by all your kind words.

Liebe grŁsse, xx

Re: we lost our little man in fur today

Glad to hear that the husband is back home after the successful surgery. You can perhaps think about getting another cat and create for him/her new lovely environment to offset the emptiness left after the loss of your other beloved cat. Then the life should come back to normal again and gain some fascinating momentum.

Now, I'm off from this emotional thread ...

Plenty of joy and happiness for upcoming festive season and strength to all family in New Year 2016.
