Re: dog insurance

Bonus.ch offers a comparison of dog insurance policies and costs. Just type in the dog's birthdate:

Going directly to an insurer's website, Helvetia offers accident and medical insurance for dogs:

Re: dog insurance

It has been quite a while since I looked into pet health insurance offers here, but back then some of the companies I contacted would not insure my dogs over 7 years old, and the one that would gave a quote for a premium that was actually more than their average monthly expenditure, with a list of exclusions longer than your arm.

I quickly decided that pet insurance was not a good option for us. But because I adopt mostly senior dogs or dogs with known medical issues my situation might be different than yours. YMMV.

Pet insurance practices may have changed in the intervening years for all I know.

You will need to contact the major companies (as per Mullhollander's post) for a quote regarding your individual situation. As you explore offers you will need to be very careful as you look at policies, and make sure you fully understand the fine print and exclusions.

---

You will also need to determine whether your vet will accept insurance, or not. Some do, some don't. Some who do still expect you to pay upfront and later claim against the insurance.

---

While routine vet care is a relative bargain here in Switzerland, specialist and catastrophic care can be expensive. A pet owner needs to be prepared for unexpected expense, it is one of the basic responsibilities we take on when we take on our pets. Every dog owner - nay, every pet owner - should have a healthy financial reserve.

---

And speaking of insurance and dogs... as you are in Basel, have you taken out private liability insurance, 3 mio cover, as is required of all dog owners under cantonal law? The good news is that your general Privathaftpflicht policy often includes the mandatory dog coverage - and if not, this is usually a pretty inexpensive addition, under CHF 100 per year.

Re: dog insurance

Another option is simply to have another current account and put a regular monthly amount into it to cover any care necessary. This is what I do. Our main account is with UBS, but we also have a PostFinance account that I put a set amount into each month. Main aim is to pay the monthly tax as we're on C permits, but I put more than the tax amount in so it has gradually built up to cover other things like pet care (when we had our cat), downpayment on the new car, etc. It gets you out of the problem with any age limit on insuring pets, though they seem to be better at that these days, plus unlike an insurance policy, it earns interest.
