2 outdoor cats need a home

Hello. Is anyone with a house and large garden looking for adopting 2 strictly outdoor cats who do not have a real home at the moment?

I live in Basel and since April 2016, 2 young male cats (see pics) started visiting my apartment through the window that is next to a hotel backyard and garden around. I initially thought that they are from far neighbors and just like to explore for treats, but later realized that they are stray (I had put a collar on them with my number after gaining trust of them, but no one contacted me). I couldn't help but provide them enough food and shelter as they need.

They are very adorable, keep clean and live together mostly in the garden which is very safe and enclosed private area of the hotel. After initial caution for few weeks, they both became very friendly to me, allowed petting and one of them even sleeps on my sofa by the window at night. I would totally adopt them, but unfortunately my stay is temporary in Switzerland over next few months and so I cannot adopt them. I have named them Sparta and Midnight

I don't want them to end up in shelter or struggle in winter and rain on their own, so please if someone is serious about giving them all the care they need, please contact me and I can explain the situation better.
I don't think that they are micro-chipped or neutered, I have advertised on tierdatenbank.ch and STMZ if they are missing cats by any chance and I will soon take Sparta to the Vet doctor for a checkup.

Please take both of them to the vet to check if they're not chipped.
My cat has not come home for about 5 weeks now - which even for her is a bit long, she's a terrible stray every summer and ~3 weeks is normal - and her being chipped at the moment I kind of rely on "no news good news". So if they're chipped you can get them back home in no time.

Re: 2 outdoor cats need a home

We'll give it some thought. Not looking for any more moggies right now, but maybe as a last resort if you can't find anyone else. We currently have 3 at our house to the West of Basel, big garden, away from the road.

But yes, they both need to be checked for chips as well as the other efforts you've already made, and info about age and general health. Sadly with no history they'll need all their vaccinations as well.

Anyway, keep the thread updated and I'll bear it in mind.

Thank you for consideration and advises A house with safe garden will be perfect for these cats. They are on canned food as well as dry food everyday.
Yes, if the Vet do not identify any chip, I will go ahead with vaccination shots for these cats and consider neutering as well. I will keep the information updated here.

Just a thought on re reading this- have you actually gone to the hotel and asked there? Quite often hotel cats are allowed to wander and not kept track of, so it's not unlikely that the hotel thinks that live there, and the cats, as is often the case, are actually living in two places.

Yes, I have gone to the hotel and asked about these cats, that's how I got an access to their private garden to check if the cats are actually living there (they are). Some workers there know about it and assume that the cats are from neighbours and are not allowed to feed them. The garden is at a level of first floor so its fences are mostly cut off from private buildings through a wide deep gap except my building which also has a back roof garden in front of my window due to a huge furniture house below. They may be able to climb down and go beyond the fences on the other sides but I doubt. Talking to an owner from one of those apartments, they also see the cats in the garden occasionally from their balcony but do not know about the whereabouts.

I believe both cats are under 1 year old but will know better through the Vet. Both cats pass by to my apartment few times throughout the day (and night) since I leave my window open for them to feed when they come. I never saw them until this spring so they could have been a kitten before escaping. They don't tend to stay too long in my apartment except Sparta the tabby one which also prefers my place on a bad weather day and more often sleeps inside at night- so you can say I got virtually adopted by them for their needs . Both fancy garden for hunting bugs (or failed attempts on birds) all the time, so they can't be an indoor house cat. For now I am here till September atleast to take care of them. In case I don't stay longer, finding a nice home with outdoor access for them is my priority, hence this post as well.

Re: 2 outdoor cats need a home

This is such a nice change from some of the "my cat/dog does not match my new shoes, can anyone adopt please" type threads They look like gorgeous cats, especially the tabby looks like straight from a Whiskas advert! It is so kind of you to look after them for now, do let us know what the vet says. My father always says it's a great honor to be adopted by a cat, they don't pick lightly

Re: 2 outdoor cats need a home

Veterinary Update: So today was a trip to the doctor for Sparta the Tabby cat for chip identifucation and I was prepared for his vaccination shots. Here is what doctor said:

No chip, but It's a neutered/castrated male so he belonged to someone in past and does not need any vaccinations; now about 1 year old or a bit more; perfectly healthy and in a very good shape. He suggested to keep a collar on them.
He made a call to a Tier emergency center in my area to enquire if someone is looking for the 2 cats but they have no record. Perhaps same goes for the black cat but I will do a quick trip for him too just to be sure.

Re: 2 outdoor cats need a home

Congratulations for your good deed :-). What I'd do would be to put up a notice on the bulletin boards you have in Migros and / or Coop. I'd particularly go to a coutryside store such as Arlesheim, Pratteln or Allschwil. There are locals with a house over there that would probably love to be able to adopt these superb animals.

Re: 2 outdoor cats need a home

Hmmmm. I'm about to go on vacation. I will recheck this post when I return in 3 weeks. If the pussy cats still need a loving home then, I could help...in the meantime I echo the sentiments of other posters - good for you for being so kind to these lovely looking felines. I do wonder if they belong to any nearby farms though - not unusual for our local farmers to not chip their pussy cats, and to let them loose outdoors to fend for themselves on the whole; whilst getting the benefit of mouse control!

Farmers don't usually bother to neuter their cats, though, which one of them certainly is ( don't know about the second one).

They are beautiful cats and I applaud the OP for taking such good care of them.

Re: 2 outdoor cats need a home

Dear all,
Thank you very much for your help and suggestions. I have good news: The cats do have a home- They live on the other side of the large garden as a whole family of 5-6 adult cats and the owners use some to breed. The tabby is called Shogun and the black one is called Prince (both are 12 month old brothers). I saw few more new born kittens born from their sister in their room which was like a little farm for cats and garden where they climb and go further. Funny story.

However, Shogun does not go along well with his father at all (3 years old, now neutered as well; Shogun would hiss at him and the two cats would defend my apartment from him as he started to come close as well since last week). The collar with my number on Shogun never worked because he goes to his real home rarely. But this week I managed to put the collar on the black cat and I got called by the owners the same day. I don't think they feed the cats the best food from what they showed, but they are experienced and have a 15 year old cat too who is doing well. They even told me to keep Shogun if I want because of the fight and were thankful enough to take care of the two cats. I wish I could keep Shogun and Prince, but they are anyway welcomed at my place until I am here and I will bit by bit cut-down on food so that they get used to their owner's food slowly again. I left a little toy with the owners that Shogun loves to play with.

I will ask the admin to delete this post soon. Best wishes.

I Hope you send the owners the vet's bill. And they are oblidged to get their cats chipped.

I very much doubt you will get anything deleted. Why??

Is that actually true? I know it's so for dogs, but wasn't aware of a requirement for cats to be chipped too.

Ours spend most of the time at their french house, but we do take them with us if we're spending extended periods away, and I've never thought to get them chipped...

Actually the Vet was through a friend's connection and he was nice enough to not charge me, since the cats were already neutered and he suggested not to vaccinate them. I don't mind taxi bills.

I did suggest them to chip their cats since they are going everywhere, but they didn't have a great excuse (they assume that usually the cats won't come home only because they died of such incidents, which happened with one of their cats). I asked them to occasionally keep collar on them so that they are not mistaken for a stray by far neighbours and they agreed that the hotel workers should be aware of the home of these cats for this reason.

About deleting the post, thought this post is a bit useless to stay for too long and pile-up on the forum.

There is no obligation to get a cat microchipped and many people don't bother although in my opinion it makes sense to do it and it doesn't actually cost much.

If you're crossing borders then yes. Otherwise not required in Switzerland, though as Belgianmum says it's a good idea if they ever do get themselves lost.
