Will you, as finder, have to pay upfront and hope to recoup the cost from the owner, if found?
Generally this is the case, if you are the person authorizing treatment for a pet animal you are responsible for the cost. You can try to recoup from the owner, but he is not legally obligated. (Morally is another thing of course...)

That said, some vets, perhaps many, will treat a found animal without charging the finder. It all depends on the vet's outlook. And I would hope that any owner would promptly pay whatever costs were incurred and thank a finder profusely for getting his pet treatment. doG knows I would be eternally grateful to any Good Samaritan who helped my mutts.

What you cannot do is authorize euthanasia, as you are not the owner. If there is no other solution and the animal is suffering unbearably but the owner cannot be found the vet is the person who must make that call.

By the bye, if you find a wild animal in need of veterinary care vets should treat without charging the person bringing the animal in. (There might be cantonal funding, although I expect this varies...) in such cases, many animal lovers do offer to pay the vet, though, as a contribution to the greater good.

Many thanks, meloncollie, for the clear and full reply.

I would hate to find myself in that position, as I know that I would probably authorise treatment, but be taking a bet on whether I'd get the money back.

Thanks also for the bonus comment about wild animals. Good to know.

Re: Tips on How To Report a Lost or Found Pet

I've found a few injured cats and paid for treatment. Whenever the owner has been found he/she has immediately offered to repay me. Most animal lovers are indeed honorable folk.

And in cases where the owner cannot be found... The way I see it, if I pay this vet bill then the vet would be in a better position to absorb the cost if another poor ownerless critter comes along. Consider it a deposit in the Bank Of Good Karma.
