Re: Calling all Staffie lovers!! (Staffordshire Bull Terrier) (Other dogs also welcom

Hi, we have a staffy x beagle and we brought him over from Australia. We have recently moved to Valais and he had to have the test for 'dangerous dogs' so we could keep him. This just involved the vet poking and prodding him to make sure he did not react badly and she asked us lots of questions about our home and then said all was fine! She advised us that the law states he should wear a muzzle or mouthguard. However we have been in CH for almost 2 years and travelled round the country and never used a muzzle. The police often come over to pat our dog and say he looks cute and we often get people telling us how well-behaved he is. If he had to wear a muzzle people would avoid him and be scared which is not good for them or our dog! I find in the french part of CH people are more welcoming to staffies than in place like Bern - not sure what you have all found?

Re: Calling all Staffie lovers!! (Staffordshire Bull Terrier) (Other dogs also welcom

And another update. We have our appointment date for Tyson's Wesentest (Yippee). To those who don't know what that is. He has (banned breed in Kanton Zurich) to go for a psychological and physical evaluation, to evalaute whether he should be muzzled and leashed or various combinations of this or anything really. You would all be amazed at the requirements (everything short of a full body cavity search). Amazingly, however, their were no requirements from me, except that I don't have a criminal record. No owner tests, nothing... And it costs CHF 800...

Anyway, if anybody needs information. I have made copies of all the forms (you may need a truck to fetch it all) i filled out and can provide them to anyone who needs them

Ty looks like such a lovely character - I'm sure he will pass with flying colors.

If you wouldn't mind, it would be very helpful to others if you could post a summary of what happens during the test. There seems to be very little info floating around online as to the actual step-by-step test.

I'm surprised that there is not more evaluation of the owner, or at least the owner/dog interaction - after all, that's what counts. (Insert rant about midguided notions of canine behavior and the unreliability of many Wesenstests... )

All the best to you both - Good luck!

Re: Calling all Staffie lovers!! (Staffordshire Bull Terrier) (Other dogs also welcom

As you may know we have 2 Rottis (well, one and a part one) and they are not banned or controlled in Kanton St Gallen. They are very well trained and wouldn't hurt a fly, they don't even bother the cats but we are very aware that some people can be scared of them because of their size and of the horror stories you hear when one does go wrong....... so we always keep them on the lead when other people are around and make them sit next to us when people pass.

The other day our farm was visited (I was about to say raided) by the local police and the chief vet for St Gallen because they had had complaints from neighbours about their behaviour and how we look after them.

They were on the farm for 2 hours, saw where they slept, spent the day, how they behaved with the chickens etc and how healthy they were generally as well as how trained. We passed with flying colours.

The police told us who had complained. Remember the farmer whos runaway hay bail destroyed our garden and nearly killed my OH and our neighbour? He got 2 ladies who were staying at his B&B to call the police saying they had been attacked by 2 out of control Rottweilers. This farmers son, one evening in a drunken rage, actually told us that if they got out and went onto his land he would shoot them.

It's beginning to feel that we're under siege here, maybe time to move!

Luckily we have plenty of deserted spots near by where they can really enjoy themselves.

Good luck! We miss our pit and staffie we lost over the last two years. They were the best dogs we ever owned and are saddened that we cannot replace them here in canton ZH. Your Tyson is a very handsome hund!

Aw, GG, I'm sorry to hear that your neighbors are acting like such (insert expletive here).

Sadly, this happens all too often here in Switzerland. Making complaints against dogs as a weapon in petty little power struggles seems to be on the rise since all the media-fueled anti-dog hysteria. When I see the direction in which Switzerland seems to be heading, I despair...

(And here I was hoping that decamping to a mountaintop would solve my neighbor problems... really sad to hear that this type of idiocy isn't limited to suburbia. Maybe my mountaintop needs to be in the Rockies, not the Alps.)

Glad to hear that you guys all passed the inspection - is there a come-back against the neighbor? Harassment, filing a false complaint, that kind of thing?

Kyra and Dylan are lovely dogs, a credit to their breed, and fantastic ambassadors for all of canine-kind.

thanks, you've answered my question. I asked because you are from SA and I knew about those organized dog fights there.
Sada, please keep in mind that you shouldn't be punishing the breed here.

In Australia, the Staffy is one of the most commonly stolen dogs for the purpose of fighting.

The people who organise these fights are the animals, and what they do to peoples 'otherwise' loving pets is terrible.

These people are every staffy owners nightmare.

I had a blue staffy in Australia (posting pic shortly) and he was the most ridiculously loving and gentle dog I've ever seen.
My little 4yo nephew used to drag him around by his ears on the wooden floors, hand feed him, and lay with him on the floor.

(oh, Rooster mike, my other dog was an Amstaff/Bull Mastif....)

Well, the dogs were out near the stable that evening so they could have wandered up the hill towards the B&B. Difficult to prove that they didn't go to say hello to them, but sorry, if you are attacked by 2 out of control Rottis, you don't call the police, the hospital would do that for you.

My OH has actually written to the farmer asking him to thank the ladies concerned for sending the chief vet and police to inspect the dogs as they confirmed that we are doing everything right re training etc and that they are the healthiest, happiest and most balanced dogs that they have seen for a long while.

That should make his blood boil a bit

Hi there, no problem at all! Ok, firstly, according to what I remember, you can only do the Wesenstest this year (2010). I.e. anything after that and you have a problem.

The process is basically split into 2 phases:

1) Application to attend the test. This includes mainly information on the dog (i.e. Pet passport, pedigreee papers, etc.). Your particulars, but only extra piece was the strafregister auszug, which was asked for. The application also has, if I remember correctly, 14 page questionnaire (approx. 60 questions), on everything about the dog and how it acts. Including some really daft questions e.g. Do you hit your dog? As if anyone who is hitting their dog will answer that truthfuly. Not very professional at all... I get the feeling this whole process was put together without much thought for the dog and how the various breeds are.

2) Once you have been "approved", then you are called to make an appointment for the actual wesenstest. The test should take between 45min and an hour. I have attached the test to this post.

I have also attached the other documents on the muzzle which I got. I am still looking for the questionnaire from phase 1, will attach once I have scanned it

Anyway, hope this helps everyone. Will add more as my memory returns

Oh and please note, this is for Kanton Zurich only, every Kanton has their own test. From what I have heard, if you passed a wesenstest in another Kanton, that does not mean you won't have to do one again if you relocate!!!

Thanks for posting the Wesentest roostermike. Well trained dogs would probably pass it but I am afraid 80% of the current dog population in CH, no matter what breed, would fail on some of these items. Hell, I would fail on some of these items (although I don't bark or bite..I do a rather good begging routine though). Poking with a stick?, wtf!

Funny (not), staffies, rotties and the like have to endure stuff even labs or sennenhunden would most likely not put up with. But are the labs/sennenhunden and so on called for this test?

I seriously doubt mine would make it through this debacle with a smile. I am very happy that canton Geneve has opted to not adopt the Wesentest, but use a test that simply judges the owners ability to control the dog, and the dog's reactions to normal everyday situations such as meeting strange dogs, or slightly strange people. The screaming, crying, chainsaw juggling, bear stampede, flaming car jump, and the infamous geyser of blood in the Wesentest seem just a bit excessive to me (the German translator on my computer may have been exaggerating slightly).

Thanks,

I sincerely stand by the phrase "Punish the Deed, not the Breed".

Nothing wrong with Staffies...... but there is seriously things wrong with people.

Don't abandon all hope on finding a Blue Staffy, I have seen two in Switzerland, so they must be here somewhere.
All Staffy's are good, but I guess with the blue you get a bit more of that 'show dog' pedigree style behaviour.

Someone mentioned earlier about the 'muzzle' making the dog look more savage...... I couldn't agree more.
(what a great way to perpetuate a ridiculous stereotype)
I just wouldn't bother muzzling my dog here - but I have to admit, it's also a small part of the reason why I left him in Australia
(Extremely difficult and long decision- but I know who has him, and I know he is not only well, but better off where he is).

Here is another pic I received of him this week

Firmly agree! I think all people who use these dogs for fighting, should have to spend at least 3 rounds with some UFC prize fighter! Then go directly to jail for a very long time.

Btw really great dog! If you are ever dog-sick , you are always more than welcome to come and play with our little buddy! (like some others here like to do...nelly...). Or alternatively, there are regular Staffie days, where you can play with more Staffie than you could ever dream of

Thanks Roostermike,
Spotting a staffy seems pretty rare around here. So I'd be keen to see a few of them all together.

I'll shoot you a quick PM

Hi All,

New update. We had the Staffy friends day. Was great! Here are a couple of pics. Plus a couple extra

Oh and if anyone is ever looking for a Staffy. I can highly recommend our breeder: www.sealstaff.ch

So anyway, now the pics!
