His butt-tuck way of sitting brings a smile to my mug. The last one is like the Dogfather at dinner.

We call it the "homeless" pose. Just put a tin in front of him and I'm sure people will give him money

Re: Calling all Staffie lovers!! (Staffordshire Bull Terrier) (Other dogs also welcom

Well chaps the latest breaking news on the Wesenstest for our dog Tyson!!

Ok, so we had the test last week thursday. I think all went pretty well. I must admit the test was quite amazing. No less than six people arrived to administer the test. Wow... One camera lady, plus another 5 guys to do the various tasks.

According to the guys who did it, it is basically structured as follows. We should get the results in around 3 weeks (they need to review all the data and video and get the vet report). Then we basically either get one of 2 outcomes: 1) permit to have the dog or 2) no permit (but then he needs to go for more training). If we get the permit it basically is either with or without limitations. Without limitations, means no need for leash or muzzle. With limitations means either with leash and muzzle or without muzzle but with leash.

My gut feeling is that we get the permit without muzzle (what we actually want), but with leash (as the dog basically needs to be a robot in order to free him of leash, and our dog just loves to play too much).

The muzzle requirement is determined by their assesment of his aggression and the leash requirement an assesment of his obedience.

I must admit the aggression test was very interesting. Basically 4 situations: 1) extremely menacing behaviour by a person towards dog (then see how he reacts), 2) extremely menacing behaviour by a person with stick towards dog (then see how he reacts), 3) food aggression test, and 4) toy aggression test. In all these situations, our dog was extremely good, much better then I would have been (I wanted to attack the guy with the stick). But Tyson was great, I think he was actually more confused by the situation, as he couldnt understand why someone wanted to be mean to him. I havent mentioned all, but these were the most important ones.

There were around 30 tasks, which took around 45 minutes to complete.

Anyway, will let you guys know what the results are in about 3 weeks. For now lets hold thumbs. But I personally think he aced the test (although I would love to see how some "non-dangerous" dogs would behave in this test...).

One wonders how many Staffies will have to be tested before the authorities realise they have made a foolish and ignorant mistake?

Yorkies, now those are the little feckers that do need aggression tests .

ps. I think my border collie may have failed the bloke with a stick test .

Wow, seems like you had an intense test! Must differ per canton which is interesting! In Valais mine was so simple - it took 30 minutes, the vet asked some questions (like whether we leave him the garden or walk with other dogs), prodded him a bit which Tobias thought was fun, let Tobias wander round her office, gave him some treats, then said all was fine and she would recommend he be allowed to stay - then I got a certificate a few days later. So I am sure yours will be fine - think they probably take dogs away straight away if they are aggressive!
Good luck with the result,
Annabelle

To be honest, I was a little worried with the stick test (not because of aggression), but that he would want to play with the stick. But Tyson figured out pretty quickly that the guy didnt want to play! But he was extremely good, actually backed up towards me for protection and remained neutral. So i think it was good.

Yeah this was definitely pretty intense. When I first arrived, I thought all the people were there to have their dogs tested (but there weren't any dogs)... But I think all went well.

All fingers, toes, paws and dewclaws here are crossed that Tyson willl get good test results, Mike!

A food aggression test? Whisky Tango Foxtrot!

I often wonder if the folks who design these things actually have any experience with real live breathing dogs.

I've said it a million times - test my understanding of my dog's behavior, test my ability to accurately assess his strengths and weakness, and most importantly, test my ability to keep my dog and all around us safe. A responsible owner is what is needed, not a robot.

Your Tyson is a star, Mike.

He most certainly is. He is the real star in this whole thing. How he puts up with it, is really amazing to me. All he wants is love and his family. And if this gets him that, then we all don't mind doing it!

Oh and one last thing. The cost is approximately CHF 750 for the whole process. Yip, quite eye-watering... But if it gets our dog a better life then I don't mind.

Mike,
That's great info to know.

The key reasons I DIDN'T bring my staffy was my perceived view of his 'quality of life'.
One thing was the amount of time I could spend with him, but the other major reason was the whole humiliation with the 'muzzle' thing.
It's good to know that if circumstances change for me here and I am in a position to look after a hound again that the authorities consider such tests.

Personally I believe in "Punish the Deed, not the Breed", and I also know that my boy would have aced that test (he did it in Australia).

Also, if they think that test is a fair judge of a dogs character, They should do that test for all dogs. That way all staffy owners can have a good 'ol laugh at those little fluffy dogs getting led around with their designer 'Chanel or Dolce & Gabana' muzzles on.

Fully agree. All Staffy's would ace this test. Its way to easy for such loving and great dogs!

Unfortunately a couple more things you need to know... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

But... The test is only valid for the canton of Zurich. I.e. outside the canton, the rules revert to what is in place in that specific canton.

Plus, this test (canton Zurich specific) is only for dogs that were already residing in the canton pre-enforcement of the ban. I.e. end last year/beginning this year. From then onwards, they are part of the 4 listed banned breeds. Therefore, cannot be purchased, brought in or owned thereafter. I also think (though can't confirm), that you are no longer allowed to import the dogs into Switzerland at all.

I know this probably breaks your heart (as it would for any Stafy owner), but you need to know... I am really sorry.

Hi Guys!!

Well great news!!! We just got the verbal confirmation that Tyson is getting his haltebewilligung (or rather we are)! He is now freed of his muzzle (most importantly!), but still has to be leashed as he is still quite young and playful.

So muzzle goes straight into the rubbish bin!!

Congratulations, can't even imagine how happy and relieved you must be!

On a side note, as I've been reading this whole post only today, I just have to say it's pretty pathetic to go after Staffies, really.... Is there a chance the authorities would take a few lessons from Meloncollie to learn about the dog/owner relationship and who's responsible for what?
