Worms growng out of kitty skin... why?

Hi all,

Just a question to inform myself and others who might have seen something similar. A few months ago, I was on holiday and visited a friend. A stray cat which and her neighbours cared for gave birth to 3 beautiful kittens. The cat is extremely wild (which is why she has not yet been caught and neutered). After a day of hearing the kittens cry under the tree where they were born, we went to check them out as it was obvious that their mother was not feeding or caring for them. Since nights were wuite cold, we placed them in a box with a cosy pullover in the same place under the tree but their mother still never showed up. Then something horrible happened. When we visited the kittens again, one of them had hundreds of little worms coming out from within the skin of his tigh and neck. At that point, thinking that their mother must have known they were sick and thats why she did not care for them, we took all 3 kittens to the vet at once.

Why does this happen? Did the mum have a disease or worms which got transferred to her kittens when still unborn? Or did a fly lay eggs in the kitten (but how could the larvae hatch in less than 2 days)?

Any info appreaciated. Hope noone gets to see the same and that the little kittens made it after all.

Did you and your friend not wait to hear the vet's opinion?

Your friend is the only one who can find out from the vet what happened to the kittens in the end.

The vet said that the chances for the little kittens were very low, (especially for the one with worms) because without their mother's milk, it's hard to keep them alive and there was no foster mother available at the clinic. Besides, he was afraid they might give the worms to other cats/kittens they might come in contact with.

ohhh.. yucky.. poor kittens..

we took in a stray kitten once too, where the mother gave birth under the shed. she lived to the ripe old age of 14 - her habit of sunbathing on the street got to her in the end..

Quite frankly, we were both quite disturbed by what we saw and at that time, all we thought about was to give the kittens to able hands. Being an emergency clinic, vets change so we dont even know who we gave them to My friend preferred not to call and check what happened since from the vet's face and words, we understood that chances were very slim and we did not want to get upset further. Since then, the mama cat was neutered and treated for worms herself before being returned to her neighbourhood.

The poor kittens!!!

I was intrigued so I did a little googling and am not sure if I am on the right track! Sounds like a condition known as Cuterebra - odd name for such a sinister disease!!

Re: Worms growng out of kitty skin... why?

Dear Summerrain,

thanks for your link. I went through it. However, it seems that such a condition is caused by a single worm under the skin especially in the face/neck region while this kitten had hundreds coming out simultaneously from within the skin of his hips. They were not more than 1mm in length each and had a creammy white colour. They were also coming out from within the ears and some also from his mouth. There was no reddening or blood coming out of the kitten's skin/ears or mouth but from how he was opening his mouth and how lethargic he was compared to his siblings, I think they caused quite a lot of discomfort

The thing I thought most plausible is that the mother cat has something wrong (maybe a worm laying eggs in her which attck the unborn babies) or I don't know what to think. I mean, how could a fly deposit eggs in a newborn kitty and they hatch and get out of the skin by the next day?

Thanks again for your post, it is always useful to learn about such things.
