I know that horses get colic from eating moldy hay... would seem reasonable to me to think that ducks would become ill from eating moldy bread.

Cut the really mouldy bits out. If they don't like it they don't eat it.

Re: Can I feed ducks mouldy bread?

Agreed - I'd take out the modly parts and give them the rest. I wouldn't feed them too much though. Any kind of grain will tend to make the liver accumulate fat deposits and have to work that much harder to keep the bird healthy - that's why they force feed ducks and geese corn and grain, to make foie gras.

Mmmm foie gras

On second thought, grab a couple of ducks and pass em here

Re: Can I feed ducks mouldy bread?

We've probably all done it but it really isn't a good idea. I used to live near a nature reserve which had signs requesting people not to feed the wildfowl because feeding them bread - with or without the mould - doesn't do the ducks and swans any favours. Bread has nowhere near the nutritional value of grain. It just fills them up but doesn't provide the nutriments they need and it stops them eating food with real nutritional value for them. And in smaller ponds etc all those bits which fall to the bottom pollute the water.

I have heard the same & also that the bread lying around that does not get eaten by the ducks attracts rats.

Just out of curiosity, but the ducks in the lake, what do they eat given that there isn't grain or corn available around lake zurich?

Answer

They dive down and eat underwater plants
Answer

Some ducks will eat small fish, insects, worms are on their diet, grain, and seeds they also, eat stuff that, People feed tham in parks usually bread and popcorn. Domestic ducks are fed poultry feed which has crushed dried corn in it.
they love wheat which is bread. etc
Answer

Do not feed them bread, it is not nutritious. They eat duck starter which you can get from a local feed store, peas, corn, green beans, limabeans, cooked carrots, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, milk, crickets, beetles, worms, feeder fish, grass, and turkey. Also at a local feed store you should get duck pellets and cracked corn. When it gets cold the need the cracked corn to keep on fat.

it's a one word answer really : NO.

Bread is not good for ducks, throwing into the water makes it very bad for fish too. Please don't feed it to the ducks.

Re: Can I feed ducks mouldy bread?

Gave up feeding birds anything at the lake in Zurich. They are hoodlums! My son and I had to run for our lives when the bloody swans decided to form a mob and check out whatever titbits we had with us. For some reason they thought we had most of the supply hidden in our shoes .

They can get their own sodding food.

Re: Can I feed ducks mouldy bread?

also attacked by a swan on lake zurich - totally agree - don't feed the animals! i'm sure all the poultry on the lake has a 'minder' that takes real good care of them when they need it...that would be the swiss way 8-)

Seriously seriously, or just let's-have-another-daft-thread? Why on earth would you give mouldy anything to anyone?

Bread has salt in which birdy doesn't need, too. BTW, I have some old batteries, can I feed them to my dog?

Re: Can I feed ducks mouldy bread?

Having once fed ducks the remnants of my previous night's 'Duck in Plum Sauce' at uni, I can confirm that mouldy bread is unlikely to do significant damage.

I would advise not getting them p*ssed though, they are probably quite nasty. This actually remiinds me of quite a good joke...

How do you turn a duck into a 70s soul singer?

Put it in the microwave until its bill withers.

Old and hardened bread is okay but mouldy bread is definitely not good for ducks. In fact it could kill them.
