Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

We are moving to Zurich from the UK (in July 06). We have a 2 year old lab and are REALLY happy with a service that places our beloved dog in a caring host family's home while were are on holiday. Does anyone know of a service that provides similar accommodation for our dog? I just can't leave him (he's a rescued dog) in a kennel while we're away and he's very active and loves to go for walks and play so I don't want him cooped up 23 hours a day.... Thanks for ANY suggestions that you have!!!!

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

Hi,

We live in Lausanne and have a six year old Labrador. It is very difficult to get good dog minders around this area, who actually exercise our dog. Our neighbours in Sydney used to mind our Labrador when we were away but no such relationships or luck here yet I'm afraid. Does anyone know of any people who would be willing to mind a Lab in the Lausanne area? Heis incredibly well trained. Thanks for the list you provided Rob but unfortunately there is no one on that list located in our area.

Regards,
Antipodean

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

I send my dog to a lady in the next village who looks after dogs in her own home. She doesn`t walk them but they have constant access to the garden. However, she just called today to say that she can`t take him this weekend after all which is a little late notice. I`ve heard of a place in Oberglatt that everyone rates so I`ll see if I can get the number.

Before we got our dog, we used to look after a friend`s golden retriever for the occasional weekend. Perhaps you could find someone to do this. There are lots of people who like dogs but couldn`t care for one full-time - it`s just finding them!

Good luck

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

Hi all, just like whyamihere suggested, I am in a position where I would gladly look after someone's dog for the occassional weekends. I'm a huge dog lover and had dogs in Australia but as we both work, we cannot have a dog of our own. We have fields and forests across the road, great for walks, as well as a little garden. Drop me a PM if I can help.

I have a Lab my self (10 years old) in emergency cases I could look after someone's dog... I live in Zurich and run my own business, so my dog comes with to work and therefore is never alone. Emergency finding a place for your dog? Post me message - maybe I have got time...

Morning! We also live in the Lausanne area and need someone to look after our dog when we go on holiday, would you be interested in a "dog swap" we have a Hungarian Vizsla, so we go for nice long walks and give her plenty of exercise and we also would not want to put her in a kennel.
kind regards
Theresa

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

aah.. just the thread I need!

Want to get in touch with people in ZH area with dogs.
We live in Kusnacht and have a 2.5 year old lab/belgian-shephard mix.
Very interested in "Dog Swapping", we would like to leave for a 1 week vacation this winter but don't dare to leave the dog in these typical "tierpensionat" shelters.

For some reason it feels much safer to leave the dog to someone who already has a dog. Probably more fun for the dog too.
Anyone who looking for the same thing? Lets 'get in contact.

Our dog is a male and friendly to all other dogs. A little nervous with completely new people but is being trained to overcome that.

Some places are linked in this thread, but has anyone actually tried any of these pet services and can give a recommendation?

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

I highly recommend my dogsitter.

She has been caring for my dogs for going on seven years now; she offers mostly in-home care, but occasionally does daily walking. She moves into our house when we have to travel and cares for my mutts just as I would if I were home. This is the pefect solution for us because the dogs stay in a familiar, stress-free environment and we have the security of the house never being left empty.

She is very, very good with animals, able to deal with all sorts of special needs, from behavioral to medical. (My pack have certainly put her to the test ) I trust her implicitly, and more importantly, the dogs love her.

Her service is very popular so you need to book well ahead, especially if you are traveling during the school holidays. She mostly covers Zürich and central Switzerland, but will travel further on occasion.

She's a bit on the expensive side, but certainly worth it.

Edited because I just saw she is listed on the swisswiki link previously given, so I guess posting her contact details is OK:

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

Sounds great .. I'm dropping you a PM

Except.. she lives in your home when you are away?
This sounds pretty weird.

On the other hand, if you trust someone with you pet, you surly can trust them with your home.

Still, I would be rather uncomfortable with someone staying in our bed just to look after the dog.

but many thanks for the tip !

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

Meloncollie - does she ever take dogs into her own home? Reason I ask is my husband is funny about anyone staying in our house (I've given up trying to convince him) and currently we have a lovely lady who has a business dogwalking and boarding small animals and dogs. My girls enjoy visiting there when we travel so they are ok with the change of scenery.

thanks

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

LR, I've sent you a PM; Angela's fees vary by what you and your dog need.

M_M, I don't think she does boarding... you could always call her and ask, though.

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

Let me help,

When I lived in England I bred and showed Dogs, I have been involved with dogs all of my life and am also a professional dog groomer. I moved here 2 years ago bringing my four girls with me. The area in which we live backs directly into woodland and open farm land my girls get walked twice a day for around an hour each time. (Well those that are fit enough)

My home has only a small garden as are most properties in Switzerland but the dogs have their own rooms in the cellar and the run of the main body of the house, although bedrooms are out of bounds........I have a grooming room set up and all dogs are bruched and groomed daily.....

I would be more than happy to board any dogs, when people go on vacation. I can pick up and drop off anywhere in Switzerland fees and other details would be arranged on an individual basis and requirements. Short stays and longer stays are also not a problem.....

check out www.charellesett.co.uk this web site is one I ran whilst in England but have not really kept it up to date now. I can also help with the importation of animals from England if you are looking for a new pet........

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

Heya there all
I live and work around Bremgarten ( only 5 hours a day ) and my fiancee and I have a 10 month old Dutch Shepherd Mix. We would be happy to help out those of you who want/need a dogsitter.
Its a two fold thing as I see it - Pepper ( our puppy ) gets to learn interaction with other dogs of all sizes and temperaments as she doesnt get a lot of time around other dogs ( except training once a week and the golden retriever at work) and you guys have a safe place to leave your beloved/s.
So please, if any one is interested please leave me a PM and we can talk about it further .

Re: Dog-Sitter information PLEASE

Katie, Thanks for the offer. We will definately need a dog-sitter from time to time for our 2 1/2 year old yellow lab. He loves to play with other dogs, so it sounds great!

Here's my email joeandrachel@hotmail.com Would you mind giving me your email so I can put it in my "dog" folder in hotmail as a possible contact for dog-sitting?

Thanks!
Rachel
