We want to take our dog with us to England when we go back at Xmas for a holiday.

Does anyone know what are the regulations / requirements to do so? Pet passport needed? Any advice on how to go about doing the necessary?

He is registered here, microchipped etc (although wasnt born in Switzerland).

From my limited experience, any problems you will encounter will be British -- i.e. the British governemnt is more concerned about importing diseases, etc, than continental European governments. So best to check with British customs/quarantine.

I believe a pet passport is required. You will need up-to-date rabies shots (actually, your dog will, not you). Sorry, this is incomplete, I strongly suggest you contact/research the British authorities for the correct procedures. Start here: DEFRA.

Yes you will need a pet passport to take your pet to the UK. A valid rabies vaccination needs to be done. Check the DEFRA website for up to date information and requirements. Please be aware that there is a time period between receiving a positive blood test result and being able to take your pet into the uk.

Also you need to get a health check done and a flea and tick treatment done between 24 and 48 hrs before the pet enters the UK.

If you are organised and have everything in place, you shouldn't have any problems.

yes you'll need a uk pet passport, all injections will need to be upto date, if your dog hasn't had his rabies injection already then your outa luck as you have to wait 6 months after this.

Then no less then 24 hours before you travel it has to have tick\worm\flea treatment from a vet and the passport filled in with the details, this HAS to be done at the vets and the vet HAS to fill in the pet passport, make sure the vet you use has done a pet passport before so knows the drill! if anything is wrong with any of the documentation your dog won't be allowed to travel, no if's or but's!!

actually thinking about it, it may have been 3 months wait after the rabies jabs (it was over 4 years ago since we bought our dogs over)

Just to clarify, the waiting period is 6 months from the date of the blood draw for the titre test, not the date of the rabies injection. These could be done the same date, but most people wait 2 weeks after vaccination to allow antibodies to develop.

But as BigBlue2 points out, if you have not already organized the UK PETS scheme you are out of luck in time for Christmas.

The DEFRA link the Sumerrain and 22yards gave will have all the info you need; just be sure that you follow the steps in the order given. If you have any questions, call the DEFRA hotline - they are generally pretty helpful.

Make sure the vet fills in the time of the tick treatment. The date alone is not sufficient because the treatment has to be applied between 24 and 48 hours of travelling. We missed a ferry because of this.

I just called DEFRA . . . . because he hasnt had the blood test we wont be able to take him at Xmas due to the 6 month wait :-(
