I never thought of that! I will do it immediately. He likes chewing at my shoes while im wearing them so in this way hopefully i wont need to go shoe shopping any time soon :P

You'll need to correct the behaviour you don't want from Day One.
Say a firm 'No!' when he goes for your shod feet. Offer him a 'legal' alternative and when he takes it, praise him.

I insisted that our foster pup sit on the mat while I put on my shoes/socks before we went out, so she practised this solemnly with me all the time.
However, her Dogpa let her play with his shoes and she'd pull his shoelaces and socks, making his whole procedure fraught with little scoldings - this went on till she was almost a year old (but only with him!).

Re: New Family addition!!

oohhhhh how gorgeous is he!!! My heart just melted.

3 months and already house trained? Thats bloody excellent! Argus is right - stop him chewing your shoes pronto. He needs to learn how to respect your space from Day 1. A firm "no" together with a hand signal that you plan to use to communicate as "no" moving forward should be used whenever he does it. Then proceed to give him a toy / chew bone as the alternative.

Here's wishing you lots of fun times with the new addition.

Time to go for puppy kindy!

We will! One thing i learned though. I would much prefer to sleep than go out in the cold in the morning. Which is a bit difficult when a particular someone insists on licking your face when he wants to go out!

Re: New Family addition!!

What a cute puppy, and it's especially nice that another rescue dog has found a loving home! Well done!

As to the chewing toys, from experience I can warmly recommend Kong toys - VERY durable and at the same time keep the dog interested (these two don't go together very often, at least in our house )

I had dogs before at home. But we were living in a house with a huge garden. This is my first dog in an apartment.
I must admit though, it will be nice not to waste the whole day be sleeping as before. Especially in the summer.

My little one is like an alarm clock - if not more persistant.

Wont let you sleep past a certain time regardless of circumstances. Will follow you around and make sure you hop into the shower (if not, you'll get "doggy eyes" or I like to call it, his SPCA-look) before sitting by the door waiting for you to take him for his first walk of the day.

Really does help you get out and start your day on a positive / productive note.

PS: I know I am humanising the dog through and through but I suspect that they are much more intelligent than we currently give them credit for.

You are more than welcome! Im sure he will be very happy to make a new friend. I wonder later in the summer when we take him for a walk along the lake, how people will react to two weirdos shouting whiskey all the time :P

Don't worry gata - dog-lovers such as myself won't even notice you - but they will most definitely want to get to know Whiskey.

Just as an after-thought; I do hope that all of you who have voting rights, will be voting in favour of the Animal Lawyer Referendum on 7th March!

Yöööh so härrzig

If you solve the chewing everything problem let me know. I've recently heard of a 11 moths old great dane that still doesn't know that everything within reach is NOT for chewing and that includes walls

It's said that before deciding on a dog's name one should go outside and shout the name at the top of one's lungs...

All my dogs came to me pre-named; although perhaps not what I would have chosen myself I kept their names, not wanting to add to their confusion as they acclimated to their new home. One of my guys has an extremely silly name - and I certainly felt like a right plonker standing in the garden calling for him...

...but that was a good incentive to work on his recall. Now I only have to call once.

But Whiskey is a wonderful name! No worries on that score.

Although I think you need to post many more pictures, just so we can see that it fits him...

Re: New Family addition!!

My dog was actually named something else before I brought him home too. It was so god damn awful that I had to change it.

He was called *drumroll please* ...........Peach.

A boy called Peach. good lordy..I definitely had to change it before he gets bullied. I found this method extremely useful for getting him used to his name: -

1. stand in front of him; I would personally leash him in case he gets distracted by something else and wanders off
2. Call his name in a happy voice and look at him
3. If he looks at you - treat / affection.

Only use his name once. If he doesn't respond, give a very gentle tug on his leash or tickle his leg so he turns to look at you.

Repeat for about 5 times over and a couple of more times during the day.

Well it had to be a food theme. After all in the house we have a Biscuit, a Mustard, a Barbeque Sauce (cats) and Ham, Bacon and Eggs (hamsters). And we have given away Pumpkin soup and Carrot Cake (cats again!)
