| | | 5 Dogs Poisoned in the Hönng Area
Heads up for dog walkers in the ZH-Hönng area - there have been 5 dogs poisoned recently.
From the Tagi: http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/zuerich/...story/14613992
Keep an eye on your dogs at all times (as we all should anyway), call the vet asap if your dog shows any symptoms such as vomiting, cramps, tremors.
Sad world, isn't it. | | The following 12 users would like to thank meloncollie for this useful post: | argus, bigblue2, Dougal's Breakfast, edot, mannie organ, Mrs. Doolittle, Nickers, Oldhand, Papa Goose, Peg A, summerrain |

Sad world, isn't it. | | | | | Although you are right, IMHO it is not enough. Keep 'em on a leash. You know how quick they can be when it comes to food.
I hope they catch the perp and give him a taste of his own medicine

One of the exercises we continually practice in our Familienhund class is 'leave the Würstli'. The trainer scatters bits of sausage around the grounds, we walk our dogs to heel, keeping them focused on us, working the 'leave' command. We then do the same thing with the dogs walking at increasing distances from us. The idea is that the dogs learn never to eat anything without permission from the owner.
So far, only one of mine has it down solid. But we keep working on it. In the meantime, they are on lead - and I've grown eyes in the back of my head. | Quote: | | | | | I hope they catch the perp and give him a taste of his own medicine | | | | | Amen.

My dog refuses to eat anything that is not from his bowl. Exceptions are things from people he knows - but I've seen him refuse to eat salami at times. I actually suspect someone tried to poison him in his "previous" life.
This sort of act is particularly cowardly. I'd find it hard to not take matters into my own hands if I found someone doing this | | The following 4 users would like to thank Boxman for this useful post: | |

What kind of sorry excuse for a human being does that?
Oh I am absolutely ****ing fuming and like Boxman, I will not hesitate to take matters in my own hands if I ever catch someone doing this. I am thinking castration, disembowlment and hanging the culprit by his/her toes at the Zurich HB till they bleed out dry.
What scares me as well is that I used to live right in that area and there were lots of dogs in the neighbourhoods, even those who dont live around that area bring dogs there as it has great walking trails up near ETH Honngerberg. The poor things....
Oooh I am so cross!
Thanks for sharing though Melloncollie.

I had more in mind what happened to Prometheus..."he was clamped to a rock in the Caucasus for betraying the secrets of the gods to men, and the gods sent eagles to feed on his liver, which was perpetually renewed."

fduvall | | | | | Great idea. Still, I think dog poop should be involved. Lots of it.

On topic: I will never understand how can people do this, we had a neighbor in Peru who threw boiling oil on another neighbor's dog. The guy was mentally ill though |

We live in Reinach BL and our two dogs were also poisoned.
Luckily they were only throwing up for 2 days permanently and recovered.
They were vomiting a lot of fresh premium meat - so not a mouse or something that they cought. Someone maliciously placed the poisoned meat out there.
As they are really mad about running (we live close to the woods) we can't keep them on leash.
So we bought open end muzzles for them. They are still able to mew and weep in them! but can't eat!

Poisoning the dogs which might have annoyed you rather than speaking with the owners seems to be part of the "passive agressive" approach which, while common everywhere, is even more popular here.

Soleil, I'm very sorry to hear about this - there are some very sick b*stards out there. Than doG your guys are recovering now. Thank doG you were able to take prompt action.
A word of caution, however: the muzzles pictured are not for use during activity - in fact, it is dangerous to let a dog wearing one run and play, as they prevent normal panting. Dogs have died of heat exhaustion wearing such muzzles during activity. There are only recommended for short term non-active use, such as during a veterinary exam. Please do not allow your dog to run and play wearing one of these.
Rather, for active play or off-lead running a basket-type muzzle should be used. These allow a dog to pant and drink normally.
Best of luck to you and your doglets - and I hope the poisoner was caught, and punished.
ETA: A follow-up to the Höngg incidents:
It was determined that the dogs who died/became ill at Höngg were not maliciously poisoned. They had eaten 'Traubenreste' - the leavings from wine production - that had been used as natural compost fertilizer. As most dog owners know, grapes and grape products are highly toxic to some dogs, causing liver and kidney damage, and can be fatal - as was the sad case here.
As grape production is common here, there is always a chance that fields fertilized with compost may contain Traubenreste... so all dog owners should be aware. Train a solid, reliable 'Leave!'. Keep your dogs in sight, keep them under control, keep them safe.
