Hi. I'm new in Switzerland and desperately sad about leaving my beloved cat behind in South Africa - it would've been too traumatic submitting him to all the immigration regulations.
Now I am looking for a kitten again. It doesn't have to be any specific breed, it matters more by whom he/she has been raised so far.
Any tips? Perhaps anyone knows about animal shelters? I need to know where to begin to look.

...and so by the time you leave Switzerland again, you would leave this cat behind as well or you don't plan to return at all?

Yeah, a shelter should be able to help you out. They are called Tierheim in German (in case you're not familiar with German already) and you can easily google them...good luck in finding a kitty.
I used to volunteer at Tierheim Pfötli they rescue animals and find new homes for them... They usually have lots of adorable kittens who would love to have a new home Their in Winkel and their website is www.tierrettungsdienst.ch

Thanks everyone, I'll follow up on that. I happened to run into a type of animal society today, by pure chance, and they gave me a whole list for the different kantons:
Hi Erma!
I know a young couple who has a beautiful and adorable persian cat called Oscar. They would like to find him a new home because they have both started to work very long hours.
I looked few times after him when they were away,so i know he is an absolutely lovely cat(they brought him in my house to be looked after as i couldn't travel to their house).
I wanted him for myself but they gave me the news a week too late(now i have my own kitty which i got her from this forum as well):-)
Let me know if you are interested and i could give you their phone number.
Kind regards,
Anna Maria

When I lived in a more rural area here there were always notices on the bulletin board in the supermarket giving away free kittens. That's where I got mine . Haven't really looked now that I'm in a fairly urban location but I'm sure cats get it on in cities too.
