Cold Remedies for Dogs

Hi all

I think my dog may have picked up a cold at the kennel last weekend.

She's a quiet dog so really seems fine but is sneezing an awful lot. She feels the cold alot so may have a caught a chill.

I don't think I need to worry about kennel cough cause she has been "vacinated" accordingly but will definately keep a close eye on her and take her to the vet.

If it was me, I would probably dose myself up with Vitamin C and maybe aspirin but I'm sure that remedy isn't ideal for her. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
Nats

Your local pharmacy or chemist shop will be able to help you. They also have medicine for animals.

Kennel cough vaccine doesn't protect the dog 100%. Perhaps your dog this, just a milder version. A visit to the vet might be in order just to be sure it is nothing serious. When our dogs are under the weather I give them homemade chicken soup (no onion). Does the trick every time.

Hey Nats,

Think its best to bring your dog to the vet to check whether its a bacterial or viral infection. Antibiotics will be needed for the former. In the meantime, I personally wouldnt give him any over the counter medication.

Keep her warm and dry and limit playtime outdoors in this weather.

Also, try running a hot bath to steam up the bathroom and let the dog breathe it in for about 5-10 minutes. That will loosen any congestion. I also second Mrs D's suggestion of chicken soup for hydration

Hope she feels better soon!

Re: Cold Remedies for Dogs

is it just a sneeze? How green and slimy is the snot?
the greener it is the sooner you should be at the vet. Also if it's not going away.

Re: Cold Remedies for Dogs

Sneezing can indicate an infection, an allergy, a foreign body in the nose, or (rarely, and usually only found in older dogs) a nasal polyp or tumor.

Generally, a few discrete sneezing incidents are not a cause for worry. But when in doubt, my first course of action is alway to call my vet. Usually he can tell me over the phone if there is any cause for concern, or not.

Some things to observe:

Is your dog sneezing out of one nostril, or both?
Is there a discharge, and if so, what kind - clear, bloody, mucoid?

(Sneezing caused by allergies tends to be bilateral - you often see a clear discharge from both nostrils. Infections can affect one or both nostrils, and you often see a bloody or mucoid discharge.)

How often does a sneezing attack occur?
How long does an attack last?
When did the sneezing start, and for how many days/weeks has this been going on?
Does your dog paw at his face just before or during an attack?
Are there any other symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, etc?

Any seasonal connection should be considered, as should the addition of any new substance in the house (cleaning products, a new carpet, perhaps a new houseplant, etc.)

And, just to be check - is this regular sneezing (air being expelled out) or reverse sneezing (air taken in)?

I'd counsel against giving any OTC meds without first speaking to your vet.

A couple of overview articles:

Hope your doglet is simply having a one-off reaction to something simple, and stops soon. But do call the vet if worried, and certainly if it persists.

Re: Cold Remedies for Dogs

WOW, thanks all I didn't expect so many responses ;-)

She seems to sneeze 5 or 10 times every hour or so. There's no discharge and definately not green. She's not pawing at her face at all. I havent changed any household products so again I don't think thats a problem.

I'm a real mother hen so it's probably only me being over cautions. It's only been around since this morning and it doens't seem to be getting any worse so I will watch her carefully and take her to the vet on Monday (or sooner) if it doesn't get any better. She's clearly not feeling too bad cause she's still bugging her brother to play

Thanks again all
Nats

No worries, 5-10 times every hour is not normal for a human, let alone a dog. I say its definitely a cause for concern and worth keeping an eye out. Let us know how she gets on!

Re: Cold Remedies for Dogs

Update!!!

Hi all

I just wanted to update you on the sneezing dogs ;-)

The sneezing continued through the weekend and by Sunday our other dog was also sneezing. 8am Monday morning I called the vet for an appointment but they recommended a Homeopathic OTC cold remedy to give them every 2 hours. By Tuesday morning the little one was much better and by Wednesday so was her brother.

Thanks again for the advise.

Have a great day all!

Nats
