How to keep the Aquarium clean?

We have got our first aquarium but the stones on the base are building up a green deposit. We have a Guppy fish which we were told will keep the tank clean but he/she is obviously not up to the task.

Any ideas?

Re: How to keep the Aquarium clean?

there will always be some algae growth in your tank. I have a biggish tank with guppies, and my stones at the bottom, get covered too. Is your filter strong enough for the size of your tank? Have you adequate lighting for it? got any fresh plants? These will help towards a cleaner tank.
There are loads of guppy websites out there also, which I have found very useful for problemshooting.

Re: How to keep the Aquarium clean?

You should look out for a magnet cleaner like this:

One side goes inside; the other part you hold on to on the outside - using circular movements to get the algae of the glass. Be careful not to get any small stones or grit stuck under the magnet working close to the bottom of the tank - otherwise you'll scratch the glass very quickly.

yes something like above is good to clean glass, DON'T get the razor blade type looking glass scraper.......they scratch the glass to buggery. I made that mistake once, and have the lovely scratches to show for it.

Sometime I clean the sides of the tank with a sponge to get the bits that dont come off easily. The guppies love it, and suck on my hand the whole time...they follow my hand and sponge all round the tank. they are such friendly little fishies.
