Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

I am on a mission to save some tropical fish! We are buying an apartment in Pfaeffikon, and the current owners have an aquarium which they cannot take with them. The aquarium is set into a large piece of furniture (like an entertainment center, but the TV has been replaced with the aquarium.)

The furniture piece and tank are scheduled to be picked up by the Brockenhaus, but the sellers will have to flush the fish unless I can find a home for them! My other alternative would be to find a smaller freestanding aquarium, in which case, I would not mind keeping the fish.

The sellers are an older couple moving into an assisted living facility. They cannot take the fish, and I will not have room to keep the furniture! Any solutions are welcome.

Help me save the fish!

Will they survive outside? I have a pond in which I can put them.

Thanks for the offer. No, they have to be in warm water he said. We have a pond as well, but the seller says the fish cannot survive in there. Thanks for trying!

Re: Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

The obvious questions:
- saltwater or fresh water?
- What fish? (If you do not know them, describe them)
- How many?
- How big?

I have a fish tank and know that some more EFers have some. I would have some more space and definitely do not want any fish to be flushed away... but everyone who owns a tank can tell you that you need to know if the fish mix well (you know - having the fish eat each other is not really better than flushing them...).

Let's save them.

Re: Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

I am afraid I have a bit of research to do. I can only remember that one of the types of fish is neon. There were two other types. Nothing to big, but not sure how many. They are freshwater, but there is a heater in the tank. I will ask my DH to make a call and get more info.

Thanks!

Can the tank be removed from the furniture and be stand alone?

How big is the furniture structure?

If all else fails I reckon you could call a local pet shop who might be interested in picking them up and reselling them.

Re: Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

I would be interested - I am setting up a new 400 litre tank in the next few days. If you dont know what they are then some photos would be helpful.

Of course i would have to see the fish before i say 100% yes i would ake them incase any are showing signs of infection.

EDIT - saw you said they are neon - many types of neon so phots are the best.

Re: Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

Thank you all again for your responses. I have one picture that we took of the setup. I tried to zoom in, but darn it if I can see any fish in there! They wanted to sell the whole piece for 200 CHF, and it is beautiful, but we need that wall for our TV!

Hubby is quite busy, as it it his first day in the office after holidays, but he will try to get more detail.

I think the tank cannot be used seperate from the furniture. At least that is what the seller said. It was custom made to fit in there and is rather narrow front to back.

Re: Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

If you can't find someone who can take the fish, perhaps give these folks a call...

http://www.fischauffangstation.ch/

It's a fish 'Tierheim'. If they themselves can't take the fish, they would probably be able to advise you what to do.

Hope the fish find a suitable new home...

Re: Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

Did you find out by now what fish there are? (and how many)?

I still have a bit space in my tank, but not too much. However, I'd love to save some if they fit into my existing group.

Re: Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

Thanks to all of you for your interest and assistance. Bad news for the fish though. Someone came out to assess their condition, and said they are too old to be easily or successfully moved.

I am not sure how many of you are interested in the furniture, but it is only available for pickup tomorrow as he has scheduled the Brocki to pick it up on Tuesday.

I know one person is interested in the furniture. The owner is home all day tomorrow, and I can get you in touch if you are interested. If any one else has interest, let me know.

Thanks!

who ever said that is talking balls...... ill challenge anyone to accuratly define the age of fish and the suitability of moving.

if the fish are not going to a new home where are they going - in the toilet.... i hope not!

As Rob said: This is complete rubbish, there is not way to assess weather or not a neon is "too old to be moved". I got my fish tank from a friend in January - with some fish that "might not survive the move". One died because of the move, some died of old age in between and four of them are still alive today.

The worst case is that they do not survive... even a chance to do so sounds better than the toilet.

I could come and rescue some tomorrow evening. Please tell us what fish and how many there are or just pm me where to come...

Re: Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

Just an FYI, from the BVet brochure 'Aquarienfische Richtig Halten':

http://www.bvet.admin.ch/tsp/02562/index.html?lang=de

Re: Free tropical fish available in Pfaeffikon ZH OR free aquarium needed!

Thanks to you all for your input. This whole communication has been a little complicated on my end, because (due to the language barrier) my husband has been doing to communicating for me. I do not know what the final resolution was for the owner (and will not ask DH to call back for details ), but he does not have the fish any more.

The tank and furniture are set to be picked up tomorrow, so I guess the whole thing is finished then.

Thanks again.
