"Secret" Dog Parks....??

I have searched EF as well as other sites relentlessly, with the hopes of finding SOME sort of information regarding dog play areas in Switzerland . . . .

While I haven't been able to find any info in cyberspace, I have now stumbled upon 2 different parks specifically for dogs in person!

The only trouble is, I only know where 1 of them is actually located (Wettingen) . . .

The other, my partner and I spotted while taking the train from Baden to Zürich Oerlikon, however it was in between train stops and we can't seem to figure out exactly where it is located! We are sure that we saw it between stops Beyond the Wettingen station.... however we aren't even sure which train to take since there are 2 different routes that trains are able to take when going from Baden to Oerlikon!

So my questions are as follows, fellow EFers . . .

1) Might anyone know of the park that I have mentioned above??

2) Might anyone know of parks that are in fact dog specific (fenced-in etc) that maybe aren't well known or even talked about??

I find it interesting that I'm unable to come across Any information on dog parks here in Switzerland, yet I have seen 2 with my own eyes right in my own canton (Aargau)!!

Thank you for reading friends....... I look forward to any feedback you can provide!!

Go to Brunau by the Saalsporthalle/ Sihl city, full of dogs and its a huge area for them to be allowed off their lead to play.
Always loads of dogs there, not exactly a secret but it is probably the best dog walking, play area I know of in Zurich.

Depending on where in Baden you are, this might be the closest one to you (there is a pull-down menu at the top if not).

I think you have to join the club, you know the kind of thing agility training, walking to heal, obstacle courses etc.

the ones in our village seem to be used quite a bit, usually someone around at the weekend and at least one evening.

That's a great place. My dog absolutely loves it there.

Somewhere closer to home for us will be the Allmend in Zollikon (same name for the bus stop). Bus 910 will get you there from Tiefenbrunnen.

Huge area for the dogs to go bonkers, play frisbee, catch and chase each other around, with a spectacular view of the lake. Weekend evenings are extremely popular - you dont really go past a couple of minutes without meeting another canine. Alternatively, you can choose to go into the forest with the dogs now that the weather's cooler - no more pesky ticks! - as the forest connects to Kusnacht. Its a good solid 1-2 hours walk. Lovely.

EDIT: give us a shout if you and your dog decide to check it out. Would love to join you!

Just watch out for runners - for some reason they don't find it amusing having to dodge dogs which aren't under control

I have nothing against dogs off the lead - and generally being dogs - but on the forest tracks a level of, at least verbal, control needs to be exercised.

Most definitely -- and I actually agree entirely. I appreciate having a clear path when I'm out for a run as well... Thank you for the heads up

Re: "Secret" Dog Parks....??

Switzerland is generally pretty dog friendly. Dogs should be kept on the lead in areas showing the "Wild Animals" sign - usually "Wildtier" with a picture of a deer. That actually pretty much covers most of the woods around the city of Zurich - and certainly along the gold coast.

I have, with a friend, had to herd a deer back into the woods just up from the old Fifa building. I have also seen a group of deer crossing the Kusnachttobler on a Sunday morning.

I have actually had similar deer sightings . . . which is part of the reason I posted this thread to begin with! We definitely have zero interest in interfering with Switzerland's wildlife... making it that much more important for us to find dog friendly play areas!!

So huge "thank you"s to all of those who have responded...

"Dog Parks", or rather dog friendly play areas in Switzerland, are not as easy to come by as they were when we lived in the US...

...which is not a way of knocking our life here in Switzerland!! We just feel it is tremendously important for us to find a place where Oscar can romp around leash free...

Thus leading to my many "thank you"s with smiley faces haha

Hi Stacey,

Glad you got the info you needed. You probably won't find so many dog specific places, on the whole Switzerland is pretty dog friendly. As long as people abide by the rules (usually clearly signed) and your dog is socially trained, you could probably find lots of places to enjoy.

Re: "Secret" Dog Parks....??

Yep, the fenced-in areas that you see from the train are indeed most likely training clubs or Hundeschule (dog schools) as mentioned - and yep, you do need to be a member or signed up for classes. The school I train at has such a park; fenced in, agility equipment, etc. However, even as a member the grounds are usable only during regularly scheduled sessions, as there are insurance, liability and noise issues to consider.

Some training clubs do have scheduled times for free play, others offer only directed activities. If you are interested in any of the dog sports, do check out a club - most have people who participate for fun only, as well as those into serious competition.

I've not found a true US-style dog park, as in an area designed specifically for dogs, where dog activities come first. The areas mentioned are indeed very dog friendly, but keep in mind that there will be people doing non-dog things there as well, so respect for all users is expected.

(Living in SZ, where all dogs must be on lead in public, how I wish we had the kind of dog parks here that we had back home!)

Hope you find what a convenient place where your doglet can romp and play.

Re: "Secret" Dog Parks....??

This won't apply to the OP, but just in case anyone stumbles on this e-mail while doing an EF search, and happens to live in Lausanne.
Here is a terrific weblink:
http://www.lausanne.ch/view.asp?DomID=63197

It shows "zones accessibles aux chiens les parcs publics et le long des rives du lac" - i.e. dog zones in the parks/ along the lake.

It has maps of the whole of Lausanne showing you exactly where dogs are not allowed, where dogs must be on leads, and all the off-lead areas. I am lucky to have a couple of parks close by with fairly decent sized off-lead areas where my dog can chase around madly with other dogs. Plus the lovely dog-friendly woods of Sauvabelin are near by too.

I wonder if other parts of Switzerland provide similar weblinks? Would be handy to know when we visit other areas!
