Re: Basset hound seeking family for 5 months

Sorry I can't help, and hope you find a solution.

BUT .....PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure your pets have up-to-date passports, even if you think you won't move back to UK. French forums are full of similar cases all the time, and dogs, cats left behind even. And please don't take pets on if your future is uncertain. I know many ex-pat families who got pets to 'soften the blow' of the move abroad - only to have to give them up, or even abandon them - at a later stage.

Re: Basset hound seeking family for 5 months

Bex, it might help if you gave a little more info, such things as:

Is your Basset neutered?
Can he live with other dogs - and if so, can he live with other males?
Can he live with cats, or other animals?
Can he live with children, and if so, from what age?
What kind of training has he had?
What are his daily exercise needs?
Can he live in a flat, or does he need a house with a garden?

Giving a bit more info may help you to find a good match.

Also, be aware that if someone cares for your dog for more than three months you need to transfer the ANIS registration in his/her name - which is in effect signing (temporary) ownership over to that person. This has some repercussions that should be thoroughly discussed and written into a contract - for everyone's peace of mind.

Hope you find a good solution for your doglet.

I understand why you would not want to kennel Ozzy until he can travel to the UK. We have 3 Bassets, all females, spayed. Bassets are great dogs and we would love to help but I just had a second operation on my foot, am back on crutches and can't make a commitment right now. But would greatly appreciate if you would answer the questions regarding your dog that MC asked.

If someone has never owned a Basset, they really need to understand the nature and character of these dogs before taking one on, even temporarily.

Oh so true...

No brisk walks...Bassets are noses on legs....95% sniffing, 5% walking
Bassets are incredibly funny, but extraordinarily single-minded and stubborn, however....a way to a Basset's mind/heart is its stomach. Bassets will do anything for food. Bassets are terribly social and friendly, which makes them lousy guard dogs...they would see a burglar as a potential new friend and if he gives them food, well then he MUST be a friend.

And BEX1234, we absolutely need a photo here
