Näh-Szene on Talacker 35 in Zurich (the Bernina sewing shop not far from Paradeplatz) sell new and second-hand sewing machines. The second-hand sewing machines have all been serviced and conditioned, and their prices are pretty good.

I've also seen a second-hand sewing machine shop near Stauffacher, but not sure of the exact location. They sell older (and cheaper) models there.

Just bought a fairly decent-looking one new from Ikea for Fr 85.

You can often find them for sale at the bigger Manor or Coop for around the 199 - 249 mark. Nothing fancy, but pretty decent ones.

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions. It looks like I will be going back to the States for the summer so I'll put my sewing projects on hold for the time being and try to get a sewing machine when I come back to Zurich later.

My local COOP had Singer sewing machines for (IIRC) around 199 SFr. I was really tempted, but it's been years since I've done any sewing.

Yes. If I hadn't just bought one at the time, I would have picked that one up to. Next time you see that grab it. You never know what project you might think of with the machine in the house!
