Wanted: Bike Kids trailer arm to tow kids bike (Zurich/Zug region) & advice

I have seen these in Jumbo and bike shops etc..

If someone has one they want to get rid of/sell, then let me know as I want to get one of these soon.

This is an arm that attaches on the adults bike and can be used to lift the front wheel of the childs bike off the gruond, effectively creating a tandom.

My thinking is that this would be a safe/easy way to negotiate roads, including hills (up and down) on the way to or from safer riding areas. Living near the top of a hill means there is limited flat places to cycle locally.

If anyone has any advice on these then I'd welcome that as well.

We may have a spare one going for you but will have to see if have all the pieces, its called a Gatortrail and is very handy as you can detatch the arm off the front of the childs bike and let them ride. When they get tired, stick it back on again and off you go.
The arm off your bike clips onto the rear frame of your bike for ease of convenience.
Never had any probs with it and the kids loved it.
Takes 30 seconds to do it. Not sure if sold here but available in the UK from Halfords etc. Last price I saw was about £45.

Re: Wanted: Bike Kids trailer arm to tow kids bike (Zurich/Zug region) & advice

Hi Perkyp,

They are about the same price here in Jumbo (under 100chf last time I looked). They had these on offer a few years ago, but did not need one then. Also seen them in Wider sports and a few other places and I really like the idea.

As you say you can hook them up when you need to and let them ride on thier own when they can and it's safe. The other option would be to drive to somewhere flatter/safer, but that's not very environmentally friendly and if they get tired, it could be a long walk back to the car....

Let me know if you have all the bits.

Thanks Neil.

Check the Sports shop in Zugerland (top floor)- they might have one. Or the new Athleticum opening in Baar (they are offering 15% off on 25-28 of March) might carry it as well.

They are 79chf in Jumbo. So unless someone has one they don't need anymore, I'll pick one up from there as we have a Jumbo locally. (Zugerland is not far for me but far enough to be a pain)

Re: Wanted: Bike Kids trailer arm to tow kids bike (Zurich/Zug region) & advice

Hi,

Can you let me know why this is safer?

The one I was looking at does the same thing, lifts the kids front wheel off the ground, but is attached higher up (on the seat Piller I think). Obviously this style would not work with a kids seat on the back of the bike as well (but will not be used this configuration).

Thanks.

Re: Wanted: Bike Kids trailer arm to tow kids bike (Zurich/Zug region) & advice

it's supposed to be more stable. i cannot speak from experience, but on a bike forum several people recommended the follow me. i didn't read anything good about the gatortrail. you might want to look up the homepages to get an idea about the different systems.
goog luck,
rokoko

Re: Wanted: Bike Kids trailer arm to tow kids bike (Zurich/Zug region) & advice

This system does appear to be more stable, and having used the gatortrail for both kids I would have probably gone for this type of system.
The problem with the gator trail is that if you corner too sharply or make a sudden move you can unbalance yourself, particularly as the coupling is attached to your saddle post which affects your centre of gravity somewhat.
Depends on how confident a rider you are, my wife was not so keen on towing our youngest, particularly on busy stretches.
One thing you have to remember with these systems is to get the front wheel height of the childs bike correct- not nice when you corner and their front wheel virtually flips you.

You can rent them for CHF 10 per month from the Zug Ludothek and try it out before you buy one.

I have so far rented numerous kiddy things that my son took no interest in eg Puky tricycle, like-a-bike, push along walker, traktor and you can always give them back when you don't need them anymore.

I was in the middle of posting an announcement on 2ememain.be to sell my follow-me tandem, when I spotted your post. If you are interested, email me at ann @ tirpor . com (no spaces, obviously!) The only downside is that we live in Belgium.
