They are still selling new seats too that won't comply with the new standards.

And more to the point, does it mean it is not safe and will anyone be checked?

The seat wil have a sticker on it somewhere:

"ECE", versions 44.03 or .04

All new car seats sold at present comply (EDIT: or should do) with this European norm. Older car seats from before 1995 and/or with the norms 44.01 or .02 are no longer permitted from 1.4.2010.

I can't say how much checking will be going on - but if there's an accident, I assume there may be problems with insurance companies paying up.

I have E2 on mine. ECE 44/03.

From my understanding, I'm extremely happy about this

The E2 refers to the country of approval. E1 being Germany, E2 is France. This according to Britax/Römer carsets homepage.

Took a while to find the poxy sticker though - its only a wee thing, 2cm by 3cm max.
